Panasonic won't release its GameCube-DVD hybrid in the US

The company says that its GameCube-DVD hybrid will remain a Japan-only product.

Panasonic has revealed that currently it has no plans to release its licensed GameCube-DVD hybrid in North America. The unit, which has a metallic casing, will be released in Japan on December 14 for a suggested retail price of $325, but according to a Panasonic spokesperson, the product will not be released outside of Japan. "It's simply a Japan device," Panasonic spokesperson Kurt Praschak told Reuters. "Right now there are absolutely no plans for US marketing." The Panasonic GameCube-DVD hybrid, officially named Q, is able to play DVD movies and GameCube games. It was most recently shown at Nintendo's Space World event.

Very cool looking. I bet they will change their minds if there is a demand in Japan. I would certainly buy one of those over a regular Gamecube to use as an extra DVD player for my bedroom. I was hoping they would release this model in the States before I bought a GameCube when PD2 comes out.

I think its a good decision. I have a feeling it wouldn't sell well enough to warrant Panasonic bringing it over. I know if there was a $199 non dvd version of the PS2 and Xbox, I would buy those first.

Agreed. I don't think I would ever be able to watch DVDs on a console without thinking it's weird. That's what my player is for.

It does look pretty sweet though. I can't seem to get enough shiny metallic pieces of electronic equipment. Gotta go for that lottery win again

I can understand there reasoning. By the time they got it out over here, most people that wanted a GC will probably already have one, so the demand probably wouldn't be great. Plus as the others said, the price of the GC is one of the main selling points, and that thing is more than the PS2 or X-box, at least by the yen to $ conversion.
