Review wanted: Shaolin Soccer
Has anyone seen it? Supposedly, it was the highest grossing movie in Hong Kong this summer. I'm curious what people thought of it.

These are just a couple threads I've found with people's opinions of the DVD and the film itself. I haven't seen any really good, in-depth reviews yet. I should have the disc within the next couple days. I'll share my thoughts on the film and DVD then.

What a treat this film was. I've been looking back on 2001 and thinking about all the disappointments and how bad movies have been this year. Shaolin Soccer is just the shot in the arm I think most moviegoers need. I watched this movie 3 times in 3 days.
Although it can be a little goofy at times, the movie is hilarious. The fight scene involving the soccer ball gave me the best laugh I've had in months. I'm not sure if this is a film for soccer purists, but being that I'm no fanatic of the sport, I loved all the tomfoolery that took place on the soccer field. This movie features lots of spoofs and gags. References to Jurassic Park, The Matrix and other movies are humorous as well. Stephen Chow also uses one moment in the film as a nice tribute to Bruce Lee.
As far as the DVD goes, this is about as good as HK DVDs get. I didn't have too many complaints about the image at all. It is on par with HK releases like Storm Riders in terms of video quality. The DTS track on this DVD is great. The bass on this track is booming, right from the opening credits. During some moments, there are annoying syncing problems. When someone swings a bottle at character's head, we hear the glass break well before the bottle makes any contact. I also noticed one or tow high pitched beeping sounds that seemed very out of place.
The extras are lacking but that seems to be expected from HK releases. The director's cut feature is more like the White Rabbit feature on The Matrix DVD. You press enter when the icon shows up to see Special FX sequences or deleted scenes. There are of course a few typos in the subtitles, but that's nitpicking isn't it? Just buy this movie, I got it for about $9. This is definitely a flick worth repeat viewing and with a stellar release with top notch image and audio quality, it's worth every penny.
