Alright, this tears it. Why, oh WHY do brand new, newly released DVDs just choke up my Toshiba SD-2300? Today, I sat down to watch the new Total Recall and Basic Instinct SE's. Well, heaven forbid there be a speck of dust on either disc, because the darn thing just freezes up for a good 5-6 seconds right in the middle of a scene (and no, it ain't the layer change). And let's not forget the "green boxes of death" that occur a good 3-4 times on EVERY movie. Is this just my player? I got it just a few months ago (to replace an earlier Toshiba that crapped out after 1 1/2 years), but my disc purchases have shot up recently (more cash + better releases will do that), and this seems to happen all the time. The thing is, if I replay a scene where an error occured, it will always play back fine. I just want to buy a darn movie, sit down after work, and enjoy it...am I asking too much? If it turns out it is the player (which is my inclination), any input on a player that isn't such a wimp would be appreciated.

Get a topline Sony. That's what I have and I've never encountered any problems.

This might be better off in the hardware forum but sounds to me like a faulty player.

I have a 2-year-old Toshiba player :( and have only had one or two lockups ever...and both were faulty discs.

I thought that too, but I wasn't sure...

Anyway, did you have other issue beyond the lock-ups? Like the afore-mentioned green boxes, or any minor skips/jumps?

The green boxes & pausing indicate a decoding problem . Probaly a bad decoder board. Exchange the unit. If out of warranty buy another unit and return the bad one.

I feel your pain. My older Mitsubishi (one of the first DVD players) was a real dog. Pixelization and lockups were common place. I finally broke down and spent a small fortune on a high-end Elite Pioneer DVL combi-player and I've haven't had a single problem with my DVDs. I've also haven't had any problems playing the DVDs that have been known to be problematic. This monster is a workhorse. I heard about it from the Laser Disc/DVD fanatics who publish the LaserDisc/DVD Newsletter. Why did I buy a DVD/LD Combi player you may ask? Well, I have a nice collection of Criterion LDs (that will never see the light of day on DVD) and a lot of really awesome, rare, autographed, limited edition box sets. I feel that I now have the best of both worlds.

I would try to play your discs on another player to see if it's the player and not the discs. That's how I discovered that I needed to replace my Mistubishi player. It sounds like that it maybe the player because the lockups/pixelization aren't consistant.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll take my player in for inspection/service (boy, am I ever glad I got that extended service plan. Saved me over $300 so far). As an aside, do you tend to notice whether or not the discs have any dust on them when you play them?

This probably won't help you...but is there a way to do a "reset" on your DVD player? My JVC progressive scan player started having problems with pixellation and skipping on common DVDs that it formerly played just fine. It just started having problems out of the blue. I found out how to do a "reset" on the player which was basically unplugging and holding down a couple of buttons on the main unit while plugging it back in. Since then, it's had no trouble at all. According to JVC customer service, simply resetting the player usually fixes problems of that type.

No idea if this type of thing would apply to your Toshiba, but you never know.

I have owned 4 dvd players and have never seen this problem with certain dvds I have seen people talk about on here and also tried certain ones and I have owned over 800 dvds at one time....but anyway

this is why i recommend pioneer dvd players, they are workhorses and will play any dvd and vcd out there. they even display pal vcds correctly and make the signal correction on its own.

rock on pioneer!!!!!!!!
