Well I have been using the old ps2 for about long enough as a dvd player, it's gining me all kinds of problems, so it's time to finally buy a dvd player, I have had my eye on the Denon DVD 2800 for some time now, but I can't find a place with it in stock for a decent price. so I have a couple of questions. 1) what do you guys think of the denon dvd 2800, is there a better progressive scan dvd player out there for the price, I'm looking to spend around 600 bucks, give or take a little. 2) where the hell can I buy one from, I really hate to go the ebay route on something that expensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated
that was exactly what I was looking for, now anyone know where I can get a Denon DVD 2800?? They seem to be sold out everywhere!!!
Thanks

For around half the price of the Denon you can get a JVC 7-disc changer with progressive scan, DVD-Audio, etc. The XV-FA90 includes built-in DD and DTS decoders. There is a cheaper version which does not include the decoders. But, the biggest advantage that this player has over the Denon is that it formats non-anamorphic and 4:3 DVDs to fit widescreen TVs. The Denon does not have this feature. Believe me, it's much more convenient to be able to leave the TV in FULL and leave the player in 16:9 Normal than have to change it everytime you put in a non-anamorphic disc. I'm a huge fan of Denon's products, especially receivers, and I'd agree that the Denon might be a better quality product, but for the price and features I think you can do much better than the Denon 2800. Panasonic and H/K also make some nice progressive scan players.

Sure, the Yamaha will do the trick. But $500 is a lot to spend on a receiver that is quickly getting outdated. (No DPL-2, no component video switching) A Denon 2802 or an Onkyo 696 will be much better in the same price range.

JVC has just introduced a new unit, XV-S60BK, that is very similar to their top of the line 723 minus DVD-Audio. The list price is $349.00 which means you should be able to find it for $249.00. Sound and Vision reviewed the unit and gave it very high marks. Like the 723 the player excells in progressive scan reproduction and converting letterbox 4 x 3 to anamorphic 16 x 9. This conversion greatly improves picture quality and overcomes the problem with HD TV's locking in "Full" when receiving progressive scan signals.

My theory has always been invest the bulk of your budget in areas that make the most noticable difference...Like Speakers, TV, or receivers....But, from my experience DVD players don't differ a whole lot in picture quality (as long as you stay away for the real cheapies)....If you want features, then you pay for them...but, for simply playing DVD's...I've always gone for the less expensive player, and put my money elsewhere....
I love Denon...they are awesome...I bought a Denon receiver, but I don't know if I would spend that much for a DVD player...

Copper Box is a Denon dealer, but they can't sell online, last I checked the Denon DVD player (as well as receivers were available)

thank you for all your help it has been very very helpful, A couple of things, anyone know what progressive scan chip/engine the JVC XV-FA90BK uses, this looks like a hell of a dvd player for the price, vcds are a big factor with me as well, so that is definately a plus. Just cashed in my change time to start really shopping!

I have this player and it's a helluva deal for the price. It uses the same chip as the 721/723 models. I can't remember the name of the chip, but it's listed at the DVD shootout. THe link for that was given in an earlier post. Anyway, I think this DVD changer has almost every feature possible. I got mine from crutchfield.com, btw. Also, there may have been some type of progressive scan upgrade, because I used to own the 721BK, which had trouble with the menu of the Cast Away DVD. The new player displays it flawlessly. As for the performance and features, I don't think you can go wrong. The only concern of mine is long term reliability. I also have the XVM555BK, which is a 3-tray JVC player. I've had it since December '99 and it's still working great (now it's used a bedroom DVD player). You just get so much more for your money with this player than the Denon, which is why I recommend it.
BTW, if you're not interested in DVD Audio and built-in DD and DTS decoders, the FA70BK 7-disc changer is about $50 cheaper than the 90. Personally, I thought it was worth an extra $50 for these features, though.
