My TV's manual (it's a Wega 36FS12) says that the 16:9 Enhanced mode is not available with this model. However the option is located in the menu setup and squeezes the picture when used. I just can't tell if it works because I don't have a DVD Player with a 16:9 mode.

Question #1: For you other owners of the FS line... does this TV indeed have a 16:9 Enchanced mode?

Question #2: If the 16:9 mode does work on this TV, would a progressive scan DVD player make a big enough difference to warrant the purchase of one instead of a non-Progressive player?

I'm looking to upgrade from my Tosh 1200 (which currently resides in the bedroom) and the PS2...

Thanks.

I have the 36FS16. My understanding is that the only difference between our two models is that mine has a 2 tuner picture in picture and yours doesn't. Mine has the "anamorphic squeeze" and yours should too, and I'm sure it does.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you have found this feature in the set up menu of the Wega but haven't been able to test it. You say your DVD player does not have the 16:9 option. I had thought that they all did. Maybe I'm wrong and some very early models didn't. I'm not familiar with your Toshiba player or when it came out. Have you thoroughly checked the set up menu on the player and looked in the owner's manual? And the PS2 which just came out last year: I can't believe the DVD player part does not have the 16:9 mode.

As for progressive scan, I don't have it but from everything I've heard it's well worth it. Someone else may be able to help you with makes and models as I have not researched it.

Good luck.

The Tosh should have 16:9 but I'm using that in the bedroom and the PS2 with the WEGA. Fiddled as I might, I can't find a 16:9 mode on the PS2 because let's be blunt... its crap as a DVD player. Theoretically I could unhook the Tosh and move it to the setup in the living room to test the TV but I'm lazy and that would require that I worm my way behind my entertainment center.

I think I'll just pick up a new player and hope for the best since I'll eventually want a progressive scan player anyway since I've found I do indeed have a 16:9 mode.

The Tosh 1200 that I bought my mom has the 16:9 aspect setting. It should be under the video menu, and via the remote, you should be able to switch between the 4:3 and 16:9 aspects. A friend of mine also was somewhat annoyed that his PS2 didn't have the 16:9 selection - but I told him, as you stated - its a gaming consloe, not a DVD player - so as such, its a crappy DVD player.

I don't know much about this model Vega TV, but does it have front panel video inputs? If so, even if its an S-Video port or a coax, you could test out the set my hooking up your Tosh to the front panel vid inputs. I personally bought an XBR400 and tested my dvd player as well as my VCR this way, before I hooked everything up in the back neatly. I realize the XBR is a bit more "high-end", but I would think that if there aren't any ports on the front, there might be an S-Vid or Coax input somewhere on the rear of the set thats somewhat easy to access (like for a camcorder input, for example).
