Limit Sticky thread to 3 per forum, plus. . .
Sticky threads have their place. But there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. I think we need to limit the number of sticky thread in each forum to 3. Otherwise it just takes up too much valuable real estate, clutters the forum and I think really hurts the forum experience.
Also, unless there is a compelling reason (like revenue generation for the site), no sticky should stay stuck for more than a week. After a week, most of the regular members are going to see a sticky already. After that it just becomes a nuisance. I try to limit anything I stick in Other to 48 hours or less.
Plus, by keeping the stickies new (or not letting them get completely old) it would re-train members to occasionally look at them, since there *might* be something worth looking at. . .versus now.
Agree, disagree?

3 threads, no more, regardless of reason.

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou post a sticky thread. Then shalt thou have no more than three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt have, and the number of the having shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Sticky Thread towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Excellent idea. Let's cull the sticky herd.
I'm also in favor of consolidating the rash of petition threads into a single thread, which should be much easier for me to ignore.

Very strongly agree with both Bushdog and Noel. I'd love to see the number of petition threads drop considerably.

I already agreed to the 3 sticky limit. But I wanted to add that since DVDTalk already has two sticky's (although I think the case replacement thread could probably be dropped and just put a link in the newcomer thread) a one and only petition thread should be created (as noted above) but change the title as new petitions are added and put a date in the title of the last change. The thread itself should just have links to each petition's thread.

OK, based on the suggestions here, I went ahead and made this thread and stuck it to the top of the DVD Talk forum:
<a href="http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=140394">Master Petition List</a>
Tell me what you think of it. Is this a good solution?

Well, it's nice, but it still encourages people to start petition threads. I think there should just be ONE petition thread, and if you're interested in such things you go there ... not 90 gillion "I Want This Or That" threads.

However, with this Master List, at least you don't have 3-4 petition threads stuck permanently to the top, like we've had for the past month in DVD Talk. Instead, you have just one sticky thread which points to all the current petitions. And it makes it easier for petition aficionadoes to find all the current petitions and new petitions (when the thread title is updated).
As for all the numerious (now non-sticky) petition threads, they're like Polls. If you don't like 'em, skip 'em. Some people like them, and they have their uses. I don't think it would be fair to outlaw them or confine them to one thread.

I noticed the job you did managing this in Other before, great job.

i find it kind of ironic that a mod started a thread about the sticky threads. aren't you the one that can move them, bushdog?

But it isn't my place to decide what goes on in other forums outside of Other. Plus, I was looking for feedback from members. I may have simply been more sensitive to it than others.
