GT3 Crash??
Yes, my driving is that bad, but seriously....
Why would GT3 freeze just before the awarding of prize money in Simulation? This seems to be the only game that does this, and it freezes regardless of which memory card is used.
I had an interesting GT2 disk that would catapult the car up in the air out over the ocean just before the finish of the Tahiti race, but that turned out to be a series of bad disks.
Anyone have a similar experience with GT3?

What's the leading cause of freezes?
Bad disk? I don't want to invest $50 to see if the disk is bad (this was a gift, and I'll bet that the store will weasel out of an exchange).
Scratch? The kids aren't as careful as they should be when they lay these things down. I can only break their fingers so many times. If it's a scratch, I'll have to eat it.
Dirty disk? I've cleaned it several times, with the same disk cleaner I use for all my CDs, DVDs, and other PS games.
Bad console? This is the only game that does this.

Do you know where the gift was purchased? I don't see why they wouldn't exchange it. I am guessing it was a birthday present or something. Just show them your license and they'll see you aren't lying

Yes, you'd have to eat it. However, sometimes you can exchange it the same way as above. There are times where people buy new games and they are scratched right out of the holder.
I have never had problems with my GT3, even when using different memory cards. I would try to exchange it, it can't hurt.

Good advice, Agt Fox.
Unfortunately, the gift was for a birthday at the end of July. Although I don't know for sure, I am suspecting that the store of origin was Best Buy, where no one will know what to do.
I'm not even sure if the givers saved the receipt.
Sigh.

I've never had a problem with Best Buy. However the last time I went in without a receipt was many years ago. I would say that I just opened it and played it and it freezes on me. It was a birthday present and I talked to the person who gave it to me and they didn't have the receipt anymore. See how that goes over with the folks at Best Buy.

Maybe I'm being overly pessimistic today, but I really don't like to go back to BB any more. That place is self-serve, including the customer service desk.
And the funny thing is that I had pre-ordered a copy of GT3 that was delivered just after receiving the gift, and I foolishly tried to trade in in the Official PS2 trade thread. I must be trying very hard to bite myself in the a$$.

Take it to an EB or a Gamestop and explain the problem. They'll know you're not trying to scam them, and I'm sure they don't have to eat the cost for malfunctioning discs.

That would be my next move as well. I agree with you on the Best Buy thing, as long as everything goes well, Best Buy is a great place to go. But once something goes wrong you'll wish you would have gone somewhere else.

Kitkat, it would freeze regardless of which memory card I was using.
But I do have good news! It turns out that the givers purchased the game at Target (of all places), and the only trouble I had was convincing the inexperienced clerk at Electronics that I wanted to take the game to the service desk and not pay for it at her register. And the game appears to work perfectly now. I still don't know if it was a bad pressing or a scratch, but that's not my worry now.
Now all I have to do is learn not to brake late.
Thanks for all the help, the dialog was helpful.
