Is "Brother" (2000) R3, 16X9?

Also, is it worth a purchase? Anyone here seen this movie?

It is Letterboxed only.. but at the price being asked $HK58 and with removable subs, DD5.1 and DTS it is definitely worth getting on spec.

Here is a link to the details: Brother 2000

regards, Tim...

IMO, it's not one of Takeshi's better films. Be sure you have his other films before you lay out money for this one.

Watched it last night and for the price it is excellent. I liked the film too - more English than before for a Takeshi film - and some well cool scenes. DTS is excellent with lots of 'offscreen' doors, talking etc from the rears. Pretty good print too. Was very impressed.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to pass on this DVD as I refuse to buy a non-anamorphic disc again.

Cool - it has DTS! I've seen Kitano's Sonatine (****), Hana-Bi (*****) and Kikujiro (***), and want to see this. I'll think about getting it. Still, the upcoming US release might be better (I'm talking anamorphic)...

Yeah, but I've heard it will be edited by Sony Pictures Classics (digitally and cut).

Sony Pictures Classics doesn't release too many anamorphic DVDs, and it will probably be edited, so the Region 2 or 3 versions may be a better idea.

The Region 2 Europe version is anamorphic and has some good looking extras too. I just ordered it from Amazon UK. I think it came out on the 20th.

Review

In Japan, the sworn brotherhood of the Yakuza is described as being “thicker than the blood of kindred brothers”. With his life under threat, disgraced Yakuza hard man Yamamoto escapes to Los Angeles in search of his half-brother Ken, a small-time drug dealer. Unable to speak the language and confused by his surrounding, Yamamoto teams up with Ken and his friend and fellow gang-member Denny. Soon Yamamoto finds himself back in the old routine. His ruthless efficiency in terrorising and killing rival gang members shocks even the blood hardened Americans, and before long Yamamoto’s gang is strong enough to join forces with a rival Japanese crime lord called Shirase.

The gang is now too big to be ignored, and they are quickly warned off by the Mafia. Yamamoto realises that there can be no turning back and as events draw towards their inevitable conclusion, the Yakuza learns that only Denny understands the ancient code of the “brotherhood”.

Dialogue in Japanese (with English subtitles) and English.
