i recently replaced my Panasonic CT27D10 with a new 27" WEGA for the apartment. its a really great television but there is one problem that i hope someone can shed some light on. here goes...
i know that some DVDs have edge enhancement problems where the surrounding border of the picture is a little brighter than the center. however, that isn't really what i'm talking about. i was wondering if the DVD player, the component cables, or maybe the input on the WEGA (Video Input 4) could be to blame for the enhancement that i see when i watch DVDs. the reason i believe that its not the DVDs themselves is because i didn't have that problem when i was using the Panasonic.
also, the edge enhancement is not there when watching television or using the VCR (Video Input 3) which leads me to suspect its the Video Input 4 on the tv that is to blame.
if anyone has had this problem or has any helpful info it is greatly appreciated.

Many TVs (I'm not familiar with your particular model) store separate video settings for each input (brighness/contrast/hue/saturation/sharpness). I suspect sharpness is set too high for that input. If you have access to either Video Essentials or Avia DVD for adjusting your TV, it will help you optimize this setting. If you don't have access, just set sharpness a little lower and see if it improves.
The "each input" thing is really important, and I just recently learned it. I always thought my VCR was screwed up, but I had just never adjusted the TV while using THAT input.

What type of video hookup do you use with the Panny?
Edge enhancement is done on purpose (I'm not saying it SHOULD be done) on some/most DVD's. If you used composite cables with the Panny, the picture might not have been clear/sharp enough to notice the edge enhancement. Now with a Wega and component video you're getting a much better picture. Now you going to notice poor transfers and edge enhancement a lot more. Now that you have a better display device you have to take the good with the bad.
BTW, have you used Avia or Video Essentials to calibrate your TV?
I've never heard of edge enhancement on TV broadcasts and VHS tapes so you shouldn't notice the problem using these sources.

to answer a few questions...
on my panasonic television i used the same setup. i was using component video cables. also, the reason i brought up the fact that i didn't notice the problem with the vcr and cable was to isolate the fact that i'm having problems with only the DVD input.
so now i'm wondering if the sharpness setting would have anything to do with the edges being brighter than the rest of the picture. guess i'll go fiddle around with it and see what happens. basically i just hope that its a bad tv set and have to get a replacement. what a pain!!

Sharpness isn't really "sharpness," its high frequency gain. When its too high you get edge enhancement. I think for that particular input, it is not set correctly. I recommend setting it correctly with VE or Avia DVD. If that is not possible, I recommend turing in down somewhat and seeing if the picture improves. Typically each input needs to be set individually. If you haven't done that yet, I think it is too soon to call the set defective (although it still might be.)
