I'm getting one as a wedding gift for my sister. Whats the best player under $250? Don't need anything fancy, its just going on a 25" with video in (not even S-video) Thanks.

Panasonic RV-31
You can get it for under $170 online or $199 in most stores.
Has Composite/S-Video/Component video outputs.
Supports CD-R/CD-RW/MP3/VCD.
Well made. Nice audio and video quality. Good with troublesome discs. I really like my RV-31.

Try the Pioneer DV-343 for about $170 at BB and other places. Excellent picture and sound quality with a one year P&L warranty. It also plays VCD,DVD-R,CD-R,CD-RW and handles problem discs very well.

The Pioneer DV-343 is now $149.99 at circuit city. Has component and optical outputs. Buy online or at the B&M.

Bought my brother an Apex from Wal-Mart earlier today.
Not bad for $90 (10% associates discount)

True that is a good deal, but you seriously think is the " Best DVD player under $250?" as the thread title states?

Probably not the best, best for the buck, could be. But, I was just sharing what I had got. The guy seemed to be on a budget and I was just sharing what I had bought.
...and he has 90 days to upgrade, exchange, or return. :)

to tell the truth.... if she'll be using it on a '25 tv with not even an s-video connection. You are not going to see any visual difference between a $80 player or a $900 player. Save some cash and buy her a decent brand name player. You can get a pretty good one for under $150 like Toshiba (SD1600) or pioneer or Sony. If you have to spend $250. Get her a bunch of Dvd's to go with it.. she'll probably appreciate that more.

Sorry I have to disagree. However, one does run into diminishing returns at a certain point.
Having owned several Apex and lower end players in the past, I can say that even on a 25" TV using composite inputs, the Pioneer will have better picture quality. It will have less pixellation, shimmer and better color. It's also going to play discs which skip and lockup on the Apex.
IMO, it's worth the extra $50 in this case. He's looking for wedding gift, so he wants something which will be simple and trouble-free to play discs when his sister and her husband(congrats by the way) insert them in the player. He's not looking for something which will cause problems.
They will be thinking about how cool her brother is while they are watching a movie on their Pioneer. Not "jeeze what a cheap bastard" while they try and get movies to play in a lesser quality player. -smile-
And face it, deep down we all want our sisters' to think we are cool. :D

I agree with you on the point of the Apex player. I am just saying that he could still get a good name brand player for much less money ie (toshiba SD1600)

Yeap I agree with you on this. There are many excellent, well performing name brand players at the sub $200 price point.
It's nice that at these prices, more people have the opportunity to purchase a decent player.

I have the Panasonic Rv-31 and adore it. A great dvd player for little money -- I've had it for a while now and have had no problems whatsoever. It is a very sleek player.
