Being this is "DVD"Talk and all, I was reluctant to bring this up, but I thought I would take a stab at it. As you may have guessed from my somewhat vague subject heading (that's a joke, folks), I'm looking to pick up an LD player sometime in the not-too-distant future. One player that caught my eye was the Yamaha CDV-W901, but I really have no frame of reference. Here are some of my guidelines (feel free to offer more):

1) Would strongly prefer a new, unopened player
2) Don't want to spend much more than $500-$600
3) Must have double-sided play, AC-3 out, S-video out

I guess that's it. I don't know a whole lot about these, so like I said, any and all input would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you're going to spend that much, I'd recommend the Pioneer DVL-919 combi LD/DVD player. I really don't know what it would run you these days but it should at least be close to the amount you quoted. It's got everything you want and much more, particularly a digital memory (for freeze frame, slo-mo etc. with CLV discs), a biggie. I know, I've got one.

I don't know anything about the Yamaha, sorry.

When getting an LD player its recomened to get Pioneer. It might be kinda hard to find a new player though so you might have to get one used. I belive the 406 has dual side play, dts, Ac3. You might find an Elite CLD-79 in that price range.

Depending on how good your comb filter is on your tv, If its good then you would use composite. If not then you would want to use S-video.

To get DD 5.1 you will need an RF output on the LD player and an RF input on your processor/receiver. If not you would need to buy an external RF demodulator. To get DTS the LD player will need an optical or coaxial digital output.

The Pioneer 919 is a fine unit- I've had mine for almost 2 years and never had any problems at all with it. They can still be found online, and if I recall they are about $600-700 brand new.

I've just recently picked up a Yamaha CDV-W901, still packaged, on eBay. I bought it to replace my Pioneer CLD-D503, and I couldn't be happier. Essentially, from what I've read, the CDV-W901 is essentially a clone of Pioneer's Elite CLD-59. A pretty well-regarded player.

An added bonus? The appearance. I never really liked the looks of Pioneer's stuff. The Yamaha seems to look a lot better sitting on my equipment rack.

Thanks for the input everyone! I've been doing some poking around, and right now I'm looking at either a Pioneer CLD-79 or the Yamaha CDV-W901. Assuming I can find either at close to the same price, does anyone have a convincing argument either way? My gut wants to go with Pioneer, but not if it is a few C-notes higher and not much better. Thanks again!
