Tekken Advance To Show at Space World

Nintendo confirms that the Iron Fist tournament will begin at this month's show in Japan.

August 1, 2001

Just when we were beginning to think that Xiaoyu would never show her pretty face on a handheld again, Nintendo has finally confirmed that Tekken Advance will be shown at this month's Space World expo.
The game (listed as Iron Fist (working title)) was spoken about in Nintendo Power several months ago, and rumored exactly a year ago when Namco solicited Tekken GBA programmers. But the game was noticeably absent from E3, then was not listed originally as one of the games to be shown at Space World (despite Nintendo Power's news story in January that they expected the game to be available soon after the American GBA launch).

Tekken fans can finally breathe easy -- Nintendo updated their Space World list to now include Namco's killer fighting series as part of the expo. No word on a developer or what kind of graphic technique will be used to make the game, nor is there any indication of if the game will be playable. More on the game will hopefully be available before the show opens on August 24.

For all the games to be shown at Space World, check out the Space World line-up list.

More Tekken GBA Info

We learn more about the game before its public debut at Space World in two weeks.

August 8, 2001

Just to clear up a bit of confusion: Tekken for Game Boy Advance is not in danger of being cancelled, despite the overblown reports elsewhere on the web. A little more than a year ago, Namco was shopping around the Tekken GBA rights to several Game Boy Advance developers. Ultimately, Sandbox Studios (Frisbee Golf, Emperor's New Groove, ESPN Hockey Tonight) was contracted to bring Tekken to the Nintendo handheld. For whatever reason, Namco cancelled Sandbox Studio's product in October 2000, nearly ten months ago. Ten months is well more than enough time for another development studio to restart the production of a game on the Game Boy Advance.

That said, Tekken for Game Boy Advance is still happening, and several Japanese sources have been reporting what the game will actually be when it makes its reported public debut at Nintendo's Space World expo in two weeks. Sandbox Studios is not working on this game.

The Game Boy Advance version, according to reports, will be a 2D port of the arcade and PlayStation Tekken 3, but thanks to the GBA's pseudo-3D capabilities, the game camera will be able to zoom in and out of the action, as well as offer a rotating ring similar to Midway's GBA port of Ready 2 Rumble Round 2. The Tekken GBA engine will contain rendered conversions of several of Tekken's original polygonal characters. The current roster of fighters include Jin Kazama, Paul Phoenix, Forest Law, Hwoarang, Gun Jack, King, Ling Xiaoyu, Nina Williams, and Yoshimitsu. Expect some hidden characters to make the list as well.

Tekken's four button punch/kick configuration has been mapped to the A, B, L and R buttons of the Game Boy Advance. Because of the near instant access of the cartridge medium, the Tag aspect of Tekken Tag Tournament may make it into the Game Boy Advance version as well...and the Game Boy Advance version may allow for three characters per team.

We'll be on the show floor at Space World in Tokyo on August 24th -- and if Tekken indeed makes a showing, you can count on a full hands-on report.

Good luck and it's a great mod. It saved my gameboy advance from Ebay.
