I have a Yamaha receiver, sony dvd player connected with an optical cable, sony 400 disc cd player connected with rca cables, and cable box connected with rca cables.. all cables are Monster Cable. and JBL NSP1 speakers.

Anyway.. The DVD and TV I have to have the volume set around -40db to hear everything good, but my CD player is VERY loud at -40db, I usually have to keep it at around -55 for music.. any idea why? I know my receiver doesn't have a way to make certain inputs be louder or anything.. and it's not an optical vs rca cable thing, cuz the tv uses RCA too.

anyone know? Just curious why the CDs are always so loud.

Also when I play CDs in my DVD player, it's not loud like the CD player is

I think that CD's are mastered at a much higher level overall than to DVD's. I remember reading a story about it in Home Theater, but I don't remember what issue it was in, or I'd see if it's online.

I don't know why CD's played in the DVD player are quiet, though...
