Today's The Day - Going To Buy A Widescreen TV - What Should I Get?

I've been coming here for almost a year now, and I've learned one thing :

You people certainly know your stuff.

I've taken your suggestions on DVDs, Speaker Hookups, and basically everything!

And now, today, I'm going to buy a new widescreen tv.


But with all the dishonesty in retail today....I'm not sure what's worth anything! Salesman will tell you anything in order for you to buy something...

So here's my question for you :

What Widescreen TV do you guys recommend? I'm looking in the budget between 2 and 3 grand.

How about the Pioneer SD-532-HD5 53".

It's at Sam's Club for $2300. Most places have it for $2800 or more (plus shipping).

Otherwise, check out Toshibas and Mitsubishis.



By the way, I replied to a dvd trade offer of yours (Boiler Room and Sleepy Hollow, etc.) via e-mail and never received a response. Can I take that to mean you're not interested?

I saw that both Sears and H.H. Gregg have the Mitsubishi 65" for $2,999. I'm seriously considering it myself.

I saw this TV @ my local Sam's. Looked like a fine model and excellent price.

Here is what I recommend.

Take some DVD's that you are familiar with.

Ask to see the DVD's you have brought on any and all TV's you are interested in.

Take into account that for the most part few of the TV's will be calibrated properly.

Ask about warranty, delivery and service availability.

Take your time!

If you're talking about getting the DVDs in jewel cases though, they've all been traded away.

Toshiba 65H80. Wonderful set, nice and big. Can be found online for about $2450. And Toshiba will cover the warrenty even if purchased online (I would double check that before buying). Get it ISF callibrated and picture is really nice.

If you're looking for something smaller/cheaper the Toshiba 40H80 runs about $1550.

I was looking at the Mitsubishi Platinum Plus series the other day. It is one step down from their diamond line which is their best offering. For the money I think it is a very good deal in the HDTV world. The difference between the Platinum Plus and the Daimond series is negligble and not worth the money. I would take a look.

The Pioneer SD-532-HD5 at Sam's Club for $2300. THATS A GREAT DEAL Pioneer makes a very good Widescreen TV.
If you are looking for something a bit smaller check out Circuit City they have the new HITACHI 43UWX10B under $2,100.00 with the stand your are looking at 2,300.00 add insurance $2700.00 This TV just came out in June 2001.
The Mitsubishi Widescreen TV have a very good assurance of compatabily with new updates.
The only brand for sure that I would stay away from is Sony.
If you buy online make sure they will take make your TV. Many will not take back any TV.

Most of the reviews I have read on Sony Wide Screen Rear Projection tv have been mixed to poor. Check out the reviews here at this site

They seem to me to be a step behind Pioneer, Mitsubishi,Hitachi,Toshiba.
Now Sony's flat screen tvs are outstanding.
So for the Money $3000.00 or less I would go with the Rear Projection that has more upto date features.
I personally think from the reviews I have read Pioneer is the best Wide screen rear projection TV. That said I just purchased the new Hitachi for the money and features and small size that we need in our home.
If you are going to be spending $3000.00 or less in most case its going to be a 2000 yr model
and Sony's older models in that price range are not what I would buy.
