I am trying to locate all of the Kurosawa films avaiable on DVD. I am aware of the following films : Ran, Seven Samauri,
High and Low, Yombjo, Sanjuro, Hidden Fortress, Movadado ( his last film) and Dersza Ursla . Forgive the spelling, I don't have my list with me at work.

Are there others out on DVD? I know Rashomon is coming out in October.

Kurosawa's earlier stuff can be seen on Mei Ah releases available from pokerindustries.com. However, these are not 'criterion' picture quality and the subtitle translations leave something to be desired. But with coupon DVDPS08 you can get 10% off a $50 order & orders > $50 get free priority shipping.

I think that's it so far. However I hope they hurry up and get the others out - In the last two days I've seen Stray Dog and The Bad Sleep Well - and they were two of the absolute best Film Noirs I've ever seen... Stack this up with High and Low, Drunken Angel and even Yojimbo(which was really the first film to blend period and noirish tones) and Kurosawa should also be credited as being one of the best directors of noir ever, in addition to just being one of the best directors ever.

Damn straight! Yojimbo and The Seven Samurai are two of my all-time favorite movies. The remakes don't even hold a candle to the originals.

I asked this in another thread, but never did find out. How's Image's release of Dersza Ursla? Is it more Criterion or Fox Lorber?

TIA!

Fox Lorber. Wait for the Ruscico (Russian) release due soon.

I thought at times it looked really good. Especially some of the snow and forest colors. Other times I guess it looked only so so. All in all I suppose it's pretty decent, but then I really have nothing to compare it to. Since this was the first time I had seen it.

Dersu Uzala is released by Kino, not by Image. Kino is closely associated with Russian film distribution channels and they have the most extensive catalog of Russian films in the US. The quality of this particular transfer is so-so, as mentioned already. I don't think that Ruscico will have access to better film elements for their transfer, but they might improve on it by doing digital restoration and by enhancing it for 16x9.

It's also possible that they have access to the original 6-channel soundtrack for doing a 5.1 DD-track, which would be great.

Re Derzu Uzala, I'm waiting for Ruscico. Might not be better, but I bet it will.

In Russia they didn't have 5.1 tracks then, only stereo. Only a couple theaters in Moscow had Dolby stereo then, the rest used plain stereo without noise reduction that Dolby provides.
