Not me, really. I was talking to a friend about the virtues of DVD and that is what she said she would want it she bought one. I gave up at that point. I've seen one of those combo's before, but isn't it like hooking a horse and buggy up to a space shuttle?

No, not really. VCR's have many features that a DVD player doesn't. Mainly, RECORDING :)

People have had tape players in their stereos for years, why should it be any different with a home theater?

That said, I wouldn't buy a combo. The ones I've seen are pretty dang cheap, and of course there's the whole upgradability problem with a combo set. The ones I've seen are way overpriced for what you're getting, and what happens when one portion breaks but the other doesn't? You're hosed.

Tell your friend God created these components seperately for a very good reason, and that it's 'unnatural' to try to combine them. Science can put 2 heads on a monkey, but should we have 2 headed monkeys?

Using that argument will either sway her away from the combos, or at least sway her away from talking to you about them. Either way, it's win/win for you!

i know that many here would quickly dismiss this notion. however, i recently have also had a friend who was interested in getting both. i looked into it and found this samsung dvd/vcr combo that was being sold at my local best buy. it's a very solid player, sleek metallic looking, bright clear display, and all the specs are up to snuff. as well, it also has a one touch recording button to "back-up" those dvd movies. also, you save yourself quite a few cables to hook up, since just one connection to the tv (or receiver) will do.

oh, and it came out to around $300 for the package.

I think the main advantage of separating VCR and DVD unit is that its much less hassle to repair or upgrade individual units if they are not in a combo box.

The advantage of having a combo VCR/DVD is that the unit is easier to move around.

Personally, I prefer to have the VCR separate from DVD so I have more options to pick the best units.

So does Sam's Club. I took one look at it and laughed. I'll bet you $20 the VCR still has macrovision blocking, so you wouldn't be able to "back up" those DVDs anyway.

Don't forget that Macrovision is still enabled, so still no way to 'backup' those DVD's.

With most combos like that you are buying a $150 DVD player and a $70 VCR for $300.
