As above ... 100%, no question. One of the best in every department and beats 90% of newer releases hands down. A true DVD reference disc.

Old disc, but for the time it was almost flawless in every way. Now that you can pick it up for $14.99 new, it has become one of the best deals in DVD. One of the top 5 in my collection. Wonderful movie too.

Yeah, I was bummed out that the movie had to end, too...

I liked the alternate ending to Castaway where Tom Hanks meets Jodie Foster and they travel to Vega

Seriously:

I consider this to be a reference DVD. It will POUND your LFE channel/subwoofer...WOW!

Buy it!

Before you watch this movie, pls be sure to turn down the level of your sub. Here's my short review;

The first half of the movie is dialog and music driven while surround is used intelligently, occasionally active at different times. The opening scene travelling further and further away from Earth is an exceptional showcase in terms of steering and seamless panning.

Music and speech from radio and TV broadcasts travel from behind to the front as if the soundfields are moving away. Surround is given quite a workout in scenes like the military helicopters approaching the observation site or at the carnival where music and noise move according to the visuals while Elie Arroway is in a car.

You'll often hear jet thrusters pan across the soundfield throughout the movie. One notable scene is during the opening of the full scale test event where four fighter jets scream past from FL to RR. Another one is when a jet plane flies from RR to a huge ship in front in a middle of a rainstorm. However the most intense moment is obviously the space travel sequence. Even during the countdown, sounds are exemplary where you'll hear the release of secure clamps and the firing of two booster ignitions. The highlight comes when Elie is walking on a gantry crane and huge round metal objects move in circle below her where sounds like an amplified metal friction pan precisely.

Also superb in its presentation is the wormhole sequence. Here distorted sounds move across the soundstage giving you a sense of extreme travelling speed.
