...erm... anyone who writes a review of any movie, book, play, etc., whether professional reviewers - such as 'America's pre-eminent movie critic' Roger Ebert - or hobbyists, whether on-line or in a newspaper or magazine, will write "their own personal review" (although, admittedly, some writers of reviews will be more 'informed' on their subjects than others)...

Absolutely not! However, here's a thoughtful critique of the film itself, from an Australian reviewer:

...and here's a POV from the UK:

Okay, I'll chime in. The DVD transfer was very good. The movie, however, was hard for me to stomach. Everybody was praising Sean Conner's performance in this film, and while it was okay to good, I didn't see anything spectacular in it. The thing I objected to the most was the smaltzy, ham-fisted sentiments that crept into the film as it went on. I enjoyed the beginning of the film, but it just sort of turned too soft and mushy by the end. The villian was pretty much one-dimensional and lacked any real bite. The young man who played the other lead character was a new comer off the street and this was his first acting job--and it looked like it. Everybody was saying how good this movie was, but I think it was probably Sean Connery's hype machine working overtime since he was one of the producer's on the film. I rented it and I'm sorry I wasted my time on this manipulative junk.
*************MINOR SPOILER BELOW:************************
Two interesting subplots (the basketball rivalry between the lead character and the hot-headed dude...and the relationship between the lead character and the dean's daughter) went absolutely nowhere. If they had been developed fully, perhaps they would have saved the film for me.

I found Finding Forrester very enlightening, yet predictable. Maybe, it is because I can recognize myself in the film and the way the film carries its dialogue with the audience. I am not saying that I am as highly blessed with quick brain as the main character, or that I am predictable. Neverthless I found the whole theme mind-rubbing.

I found the movie to being better than I gave it credit for. I thought it would be sappy and predictable, but it wasn't. There were oppurtunities for it to be that way:
It's not in my must haves as a dvd, but it was worth watching.

I thought Finding Forrester was an enjoyable movie. Its plot was sort of like a mixture of Good Will Hunting and Wonder Boys, and it's better than GWH but not nearly as good as WB. I liked the J.D. Salinger inspired elements of the movie and, although the story is rather predictable, it thankfully didn't sink into hokey sentimentality as other "inspirational" type movies usually do. So, all-in-all, an enjoyable movie worth a rental, but I wouldn't recommend it as a purchase.

Not enjoyed much at all. It is a case study in not watching the trailer for this b/c it shows scenes it should not. Suggest "Good Will Hunting" or "Drugstore Cowboy" or "My Own Private Idaho" for remarkably better work by him.
