Getting a Sony WEGA

Ok I'm going to get a 27in WEGA. How much do I need to spend on a DVD player. Will I notice the difference between a $300 player & one that costs $1200. Do I need progressive scan? Thanks for the help, you guys rock.

I believe progressive output would not be accepted by that set, although I could be wrong. You certainly don't need it.

A $300 player will be fine. Only hard core videophiles will notice much of a difference from a decent mid-level player (i.e. toshiba, sony's in the $300 range) and a much more expensive one. As I understand it, though I could easily be wrong, progressive scan doesn't due you much good unless you have a big screen tv, and only does a ton of good if you have an HDTV. I have a Toshiba 2109, and a 27" Wega, and couldn't be happier. I've never had a single problem with either.

The 27 inch wega does not accept progressive scan. I'm sure the $300 dollar player would be more than adequate for that set.

Actually, a player equivalent to a Toshiba 2109 should not cost $300, more like $180 or less for the current model, ie Toshiba 1600.

Generally, the Toshiba is considered equivalent to players costing $50 more from other manufacturers.

I forgot to mention that it was summer 1999 when I got my 2109 for $299. :)

personally, I would get a sony player. The quality is great, the disc compatibility has been the best, and you are getting the sony set, so the remote should be a snap to set up and be full featured.

Can you elaborate on the remote issue?

My Sony Wega remote does have DVD capability, but it just does Play, Rewind, etc. If you suddenly notice that the DVD's default audio is 2ch, and want to change it to 5.1, you'll need the DVD player's remote anyway.

And, the Wega remote does have codes for other brands of DVDs and VCRs.

But, of course, the Sony DVD players are good.

Sometimes, it's just a matter of which brand is on big sale when you want to buy one.

BTW, if you want to play CD-Rs or VCDs on the DVD player, check each individual model's specs to see if that is supported.
