Hi Guys n Gals!
I 've got this JVC 501 player that ia a piece of crap and doesnt work right. I can have JVC try to fix for about $100-150 or should I sell it "as is" on ebay and take my loss? This was their first model I believe that had DTS. I just hate having it laying around and it reminds me of the bad memories..LOL Thanx for any input :) G

Have you tried flashing the EPROM? This cures (at least temporarily) most "disc won't play" issues.
From JVC's site:
Make sure there is no Disc in the tray.
Shut off the unit and unplug it from the AC outlet.
Press and hold the "On Screen" and "Title" Keys, simultaneously.
While holding these keys, plug the AC cord back into the outlet. (TEST JC3 or JC2 will appear on the display)
Release these keys and then press the "Enter" key.
The "Resume" light will illuminate. (initialization is complete)
Press the "Power button" to turn the unit off.
Press the "Power button" to turn the unit back on. (your player should be functioning properly now.)

Yeah , I have tried almost everything except a hammer. :) Basically it will freeze up the screen and audio will be all garbly if it can play. JVC says that model was not a LEMON..lol. Somebody was trying to start a class action lawsuit against JVC but I never found out if that went through.

Yes that lawsuit did not go through. The 501 and 701 were both crap. It took me countless letters and telephone calls to JVC before they did anything. I had my 701 fixed 3 x's at a cost of $250.00. They still will not admit to the models as lemons. Which we all know that they are. I was very very luckey I got JVC to give me a new 723. What a difference, not one problem in 6 months.

I had been using my 701 as a cd player for about a month and it gagged a bit when re-introduced to a dvd. I was lazy and some of the images were interesting, so I let it fester, but I did the reboot trick and it is working fine again.
The unfortunate thing is that JVC, an average consumer electronics company, was flat out lying to its customers regarding the 501 and 701. They knew those players were doomed even as they boxed them. They will take your money if the reboot doesn't work, but they know they can't fix it.
patrckpiteo, when your x01 was working properly as a 480i dvd player, was it equal to your 723, when used as a 480i player? The best my tube can do is basic 480i and I am wondering if the 723 does better 480i, not that I would buy one. I'm just interested in keeping track of JVC's progress.

I will tell you this that the 723 has worked very very well.
The picture is real good. Like I said the dvd-audio is just plain awesome.... This is one solid dvd player. I too would not buy another thing from JVC. I was very lucky that I got them to do something. The 701 can not hold a candle to the 723. It took them 2 models to get it right..........

That's like winning the lottery. I returned the first player but the one I have now only needs an occasional boot, a procedure I can do with my eyes closed now.
gmallen, I think it will take more than complaining about it. Patp invested a lot of time and multiple servicings before JVC offered him his new player. Add all of that up and he didn't really score when JVC finally relented.

It does have progressive out, plus dvd-audio. Yes it did take over around $250.00. Add on that 3 times in the shop. It also took about a million telephone calls to around 5 different people at JVC. I think they were tired of hearing from me. The good news is that I did not get stuck with the crapped out lemon 701. Now I have a Tosh, and the JVC 723. The 723 has become my main machine now. I mean it is that good.... It is a shame it took those idiots 2 models to get it right. What a shame. They stuck it to and continue to stick it to the consumer. Red Dog I would listen to LtlPhysics and play the lottery. You are most likely the only one who has a 701 that has not crapped out a least once. Do you use it a lot? Do you use it at all? just kidding about the at all part...

There are other permutations of the 501 to check on.
I've never auctioned a piece of crap because I don't think it's ethical, but if you clearly say that it is completely "as is" you may get a few bucks for the parts.
You could go patp's route and keep returning it until they hate you and send you a new player just to get rid of you.
That would require time, money, vocal sparring and the loss of a functioning player while your dvds very slowly decay month after month after month.
You could take it outside and put a golf ball on it and practice your swing. I don't golf so my first swing would probably be the last.
