Hendrik,
I don't know if you have actualy seen the movie or if you are responding based on the review by Mr Cranky, but 1,206 people rated the movie at IMDB and 927 of those rated it 6 or above (259 rated it a 10). Frankly Mr Cranky seems to be bothered by his own racial sensitivities.

I've provided the first review of the DVD at the link below.
DVD Review: Save The Last Dance
Very nice image and audio quality and some above-average extras.

brez: ...just to please you and others who -incomprehensibly- love this silly, undiluted schlock movie, know that 'America's pre-eminent movie critic' Roger Ebert -equally incomprehensibly- gave it three out of four stars (which makes me at least wonder how seriously one should take his opinions on any other movies...) ...and, oh, yes, I did see it in the theater - unfortunately...

Hendrik,
I should have noted in my prior post, I have not seen the movie. I was pointing out the contrast between Cranky's review and the opinions expressed by the voters at IMDB. Frankly it does not sound like my kind of movie.

"know that 'America's pre-eminent movie critic' Roger Ebert -equally incomprehensibly- gave it three out of four stars"
actually, this is comprehensible if you are aware of where current-day ebert's sensibilities lie: it is a movie with a black protagonist, is sensitive to black issues, and is one of those trite pc "interracial love stories" very much like ebert's experiences in real life. it is difficult to find ebert slamming a black movie or black-related movie no matter how crappy it is. only the most lame (ie. 'how to be a playa'-type) black movies will receive a negative review from him (not exactly sure about 'how to be..', though, just using it as a genre example).

LupinIV: Thanks for your post - it explains a lot...
I do think that, generally, Ebert's reviews are ok (except the one for STLD)- but I always look at a few others, too (thank you Internet!), to see what someone in, say, New York, or San Francisco, or Paris, or Sydney has to say. And I looove Mr Cranky's reviews: it's quite salutary to read his take on what are essentially schlock movies - also, he frequently is very funny (just MHO, of course!)...
