Here's my new DIY main speakers (http://www.io.com/~patman/s1.html) that I built from the ground up with plenty of research and help from the DIY community.

The above link shows all of the construction steps up to this point. The finishing will be done within a few weeks (I hope).

How long does that take? And what kind of $$$ are we talking?

The construction took a couple of weeks working sporadically if you noticed on the webpage, it's basically a diary.

Material Costs: around $450-$500 for the pair (if you have access to a nice wood shop or the tools):
$300 in drivers
$80 in crossover parts/knick-knacks
$20 in wood
$100 in misc. stuff like paint, screws, wood veneer, glue, caulk, etc.

I read it, I just wanted to make sure I was doing math correctly.

So, the speakers were pretty cheap... Hmm not bad. Do they sound hot?

I'm in the final crossover tweaking phase (well until I get an alternate crossover that a buddy is working on), but they don't sound at all crappy. The imaging is nice, the soundstage is also nice, I'm working on getting the right amount of bass out of the speakers.
