Adding a dts decorder to your existing player??????

This might have been asked but could someone direct to where or how I could upgrade my existing sonySD300 without having to break the bank or tossing my existing equipment.

Exactly what feature does the Sony SD300 has? Built in DD decoder? I suppose it will at least pass DTS bitstreams o/w you can't play DTS discs period.

How 'bout your receiver? Any 5.1 preamp inputs?

If the Sony passes DTS bitstreams (should have the DTS logo on the faceplate) and has no decoder of it's own while your receiver has 5.1 preamp inputs you can try the Millennium 2.4.6 DTS decoder for ~$200 (or cheaper at ebay, other forums for sale sections, etc.). Check out http://www.5point1.com

The S300 was one of Sony's earlier models, and I believe that it doesn't pass the DTS bitstream. There is nothing you can really do to the player to make it pass the DTS bitstream, which is essential to hearing the DTS soundtrack on DVDs. Unfortunately, you'll have to buy a new DVD player that bears the DTS logo. The good news is that you can probably find one for $200.

To get DTS sound, you need (a) a player that can recognize DTS, (b) a DTS decoder, and (c) a receiver/amplifier with 6 channels (5 surround + sub). Most people have a DTS-enabled player and a receiver with the decoder built-in, which is easiest and best. You could also get a player with the DTS decoder built-in and a receiver with 6-channel inputs, but those players are rare. There is also the possibility of getting a DTS-enabled player, an external DTS decoder, and a receiver with 6-channel inputs.

Well, too bad. Mine was the same situation till I added the Tosh 2109 ($70 @ CDNow) and the Milly ($200 @ 5point1.com). I had the Sony DVPS3000 and the Onkyo TXDS939 to start out.
