I have just a small question regarding Regional Coding Enhancement and the FAQ at http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html
I apologize if this has already been covered somewhere. :-)
When the FAQ lists a number of players and say that they "pass the RCE Test," does that mean, as one would assume, that they WILL play RCE discs?
I have a "region-free" (multi-region?) Samsung DVD-709 player myself. I have no idea how that feature technically works on the player - whether it reports itself as accepting any region or whether it does it in a way that is smart enough to handle RCE, I only know that it's automatic. I did notice Samsung DVD-709 on the list, so I thought I should ask you knowledgeable guys. :-)
A small second question: is the list on the FAQ page over titles that have RCE up to date?
Thanks!
Ole

rce & JVC machines
I have a JVC XV-M557 that I disappointing just found is NOT RCE compatible when trying to play "The Patriot".
The "Q: Which players pass the RCE Test?" list at http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html does list a JVC 557 model as being compatible, but my DVD player doesnt quite match this model number & definately isnt compatible.
Does anyone know of a work around on this model?
tks

Have you tried this from the faq?
Q: Are there workarounds for RCE Region-Free or Code-Free DVD players?
A: RCE does affect these players but there are work arounds:
1. If your player has manual Regional Switch capability, then use the manual switch and set it to Region 1.
2. If this doesn't work, play a non-RCE Region 1 title for a few seconds, and then put in the RCE title.
This worked for my Region-Free player,
Prutser.

it worked!
tks for your reply.
As my player doesn't have a manual Regional Switch capability, I your second suggestion. Fter playing a non-RCE Region 1 title for a few seconds (past the FBI warning screen), I put in the RCE title & it worked!
BTW I had tried this before, but only to the menu screen. When I tried again I actually started the movie & this switched the player over to R1 mode. So the trick is to actually play the movie - not just the menu.
tks again
