I've seen the film and will probably pick up the DVD this weekend. Any comments on the transfer and extras?

Thanks....

Here was my review:

The long and the short of it is that Criterion should be ashamed of themselves for releasing this nonanamorphic laserdisc rehash. To make matters worse, this disc features a very poor mono track, even when compared against other mono tracks.

So, we have one positive review and one negative review. Anyone care to be the tie breaker?

It's a great film, sort of Taxi Driver meets The searchers/Hardcore. I hadn't seen it since it's theatrical release and forgot how good this film really is.

That said, the commentary track is good but it's too bad Bob Hoskins and Neil Jordan recorded it separately, instead of together. Also they should have made the transfer anamorphic, but I do believe that Neil Jordan approved this disc before it was released.

Finally, The review I read said that image was a little bright and to darken the screen to bring out the colors. This worked.

cheers, Tony Block

I'm glad to see that someone else would compare it to "Hardcore", another film that I would love to have on DVD...preferably with a commentary by Paul Schrader. The first time I saw "Mona Lisa" (a few months before the Criterion DVD was announced) was just a few weeks after I had seen "Hardcore" for the first time in years. After watching it, I suggested to a friend that it would be a great selection for the Criterion Collection. I even added that they should make a documentary for the disc, playing on the title of the excellent documentary on the "Peeping Tom" DVD....calling it "Mona Lisa: A Very British Hardcore."

I liked the film but agree with JustinS that Criterion did a poor job with the transfer. It's a surprisingly weak effort, especially since they didn't both to remaster the picture; the movie's 1.77:1 aspect ratio perfectly matches 16X9 yet no anamorphic enhancement? Lame!

Anyway, here's a link to my full review:

Mona Lisa

Having seen this movie back in 1986 (loved it) i was wondering if the Criterion Dvd is worth a purchase. I have read that the transfer is not the greatest. Any opinion's are apreciated.

Great movie, haven't had the chance to see the disc as yet, but here is a link that will hook you up with quite a few web reviews.

I thought the transfer was ok, not the best film from criterion though.

FYI, I merged this with an older existing thread to help keep things together, and also to give you a chance to read some opinions on the transfer.
