I went to our local anime con this weekend and sat in on the Funimation and Viz panels. Interestingly both were pitching their subscription streaming services: Funimation Elite for $8 per month and VIZ Neon Alley for $7 (so both in the Netflix-y range). I do like how they're different from Netflix/Amazon Prime in that they roll out new episodes weekly (I think, based on my hazy memories of the pitches) in addition to having catalog content.

Funimation, Crunchyroll and The Anime Network are all video-on-demand like Netflix. They have a huge library of catalog titles. And they carry a couple shows that are currently airing in Japan (adding new episodes each week).

Neon Alley is more like HBO without the ability to DVR episodes. They have a set schedule of programming. So if you miss an episode when it's scheduled, you're out of luck. And their library is tiny with older, catalog stuff.

I subscribe to FUNi and Crunchyroll. I dropped my sub to The Anime Network because it doesn't have a Roku, Xbox or PS3 app. If Neon Alley offered video-on-demand and had a bigger catalog, I'd probably subscribe to them.

I've been happy with my streaming subscription to Crunchyroll, especially once they were made available on newer Panasonic plasmas. I wasn't that impressed with their app's performance on the PS3, too many glitches.

Do you know if Funimation's streaming service has an app yet for the ROKU or other similar device? I hate watching programs on my computer.

I had problems with Crunchyroll on the PS3 too. It kept crashing the console requiring a hard reboot. I had some discussions with CR support on their message board, but didn't make any progress in getting it fixed. Seems to be an ongoing problem affecting many PS3 users.

Get a Roku. The Crunchyroll app works great on that. They also have a Funimation app. And you can get anime at Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu+ and Crackle. You can stream some free (legit) anime shows from Youtube using the VideoBuzz app. And there's a Manga app with about 15 shows and a dozen movies (free with commercials). Lots of anime stuff on the Roku.

The Funimation app on the Roku sucked ass until about a couple weeks ago. It was slow and sluggish. But they got it fixed and now it's real smooth. The only drawback is the queue. You can only queue episodes and not entire shows, which makes it worthless. Here's a preview of the Roku app:
