I'm surprised that VIZ Video didn't jump on this really early, since VIZ is owned by the same conglomerate in Japan that owns Shueisha, who publishes the Rosario + Vampire manga in the Jump Squared anthology (it's still being published even now).

I'm hoping it will be one of the first FUNimation Blu-ray releases, since the series was broadcast in HD in Japan originally.

Hasn't Funimation released a lot of Blu-ray already? I don't think VIZ has done any.

FUNimation has many Blu-rays out, I hope it gets a Blu release.

Funimation also releases One Piece anime and VIZ releasees the manga. Its not that odd for it to happen. I have a feeling thats why Rosario + Vampire took so long to get licensed.

Re: Unreleased Licensed U.S. Anime Properties

You know I am far FAAAAAAR out of the loop when I don't recognize any of these titles. But then again, the level of my anime watching peaked around the late 90's/early '00s. Some of these titles do look intriguing, but boy do I have some catching up to do. I haven't even seen Naruto, Bleach, or Gurren Langan yet

First Squad The Moment of Truth Acquired By Anchor Bay

June 08, 2010

Anchor Bay Entertainment announced today it has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the award-winning animated thriller First Squad The Moment of Truth from LA-based XYZ Films. The film was created and written by Misha Sprits and Aljosha Klimov and directed by Yoshiharu Ashino (Pokemon: Jirachi-Wish Maker, Piglets Big Movie). The film was produced by Molot Films and Studio 4C.

First Squad has garnered several nominations and awards including the Kommersant Newspaper’s Prizes at the Moscow International Film Festival, as well as Best Animated Feature at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The film has also screened at the Locarno, Moscow, Tallinn, Sitges and Fantastic Fest Film Festivals.

“First Squad offers fans a unique storyline about WWII and has received noticed from several film festivals,” commented Anchor Bay Entertainment President Bill Clark. “Anchor Bay is pleased to be releasing the film on both DVD and Blu-ray later this summer.”

The deal for First Squad was negotiated by James Shapiro and Kevin Carney for Anchor Bay Entertainment / Manga Entertainment and Todd Brown for XYZ Films.

Set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front, its main cast is a group of Soviet teens with extraordinary abilities. The teenagers have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army. They are opposed by a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who is attempting to raise from the dead a supernatural army of crusaders from the 12th Century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them in the Nazi cause.

Studio 4C is one of the most respected animation houses in the world, responsible for overseeing the ANIMATRIX project for Warner Brothers while also producing an impressive slate of hugely acclaimed titles of their own including the GENIUS PARTY anthology films, Masaaki Yuasa’s MIND GAME and Michael Arias’ TEKKON KINKREET. First Squad marks Molot Films first picture and the company is currently preparing additional animated projects that will start production later this year.

Please let us know when it's set to come out.

Staff (Honey and Clover, Slayers, Toradora!). Utena has been described as one of the top five “best anime of all time” (Anime Insider magazine, among others), and the project also inspired animated film, manga and stageplay adaptations. Both shoujo (girls’) manga, written and illustrated by Chiho Saito, were published in North America by VIZ Media.
Utena is a spirited teenage girl with an unusual dream – to become a prince who helps those in need. However, this sense of chivalry soon places her at odds with her classmates at the Ohtori Academy and thrusts her into a series of mysterious and dangerous duels against members of its student council.

Re: Unreleased Licensed U.S. Anime Properties

SORA NO WOTO

Right Stuf’s Nozomi Entertainment also announced its license for SORA NO WOTO. The 12-episode series and its DVD-exclusive special episodes are currently scheduled for release in 2011, as a single DVD box set with Japanese audio and English-language subtitles.

Sora no Woto (literally, “Sound of the Sky”) aired on TV Tokyo during Spring 2010 and was the first series produced as part of the “Anime no Chikara” program, a joint initiative by TV Tokyo and Aniplex to develop original animated content for television.

The series is based on an original concept by Paradores and features direction by Mamoru Kanbe (Elfin Lied, Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie), series composition and scripting by Hiroyuki Yoshino (Macross Frontier, My-Otome) and animation by A-1 Pictures (Black Butler, Big Windup!). Sora no Woto’s opening theme is composed by Yuki Kajiura (Noir, .hack//SIGN) and performed by Kalafina (Black Butler).
Inspired by the female soldier who rescued her as a child – and haunted by the refrain the young woman played on her trumpet – Kanata joins the military, determined to become a bugler. She still has much to learn, though, and she is assigned to a remote outpost at the edge of the war-torn landscape. Although a ceasefire has been declared, the women of the 1121st Platoon are charged with both maintaining the Clocktower Fortress and defending the town where it is located from enemy attack.
