I'm sure we've all been there... You let a friend or family member borrow a disc and they return it in condition worse than you lent it out. Your kids mess up discs.

Well this happened to me today... except for the fact that the cleaning people did it.

Thats right, someone hired to come into my little bedroom (still live at home) and invade my space to make it better have made it considerably worse. I have 2 friends I let borrow discs because they are as anal-retentive about their discs as I am. Nobody else gets use of them, not even family members in the home. I came home from traffic court this morning in a great mood (I got off!) and have it immediately replaced with anger and disgust. I find my Phantasm Sphere boxset from the UK crooked on the shelf, lid half off and scratched. The discs inside have obviously been dropped as all 5 have been shoved into 1 slot. I thought about crying for a second and then immediately god pissed off.

I cannot wait to get the phone number for these people so I can lose my mind on them and get the money for a replacement set.

Its not at all. I didn't hire them, I don't like people being in my private space without me there. Whether its a friend, my mother, God, whoever. My family hired this company to clean the whole house, and it just happens that I was at traffic court while they were here so I couldn't watch them (I would have).

Also, I keep it clean. I keep any part of the house I use clean... kitchen, bathroom, laundry area. Theres never a mess to pick up. Thats why it makes me even more angry.

Nobody ever touches my DVDs. I don't even lend them out to my most trusted friends. Even my wife knows not to touch them and there is a lock on the door. When I lived at home I had a lock on my bedroom door as well. And when I have kids, the lock on my DVD room (or as I call it the library) will be locked at all times. This cleaning crew is lucky they are dealing with you. They way I see the person who dropped it and their entire family should be tied to a bed and set on fire. But really... You should get a lock for your door (if you don't already) and keep it locked at all times. Did you know there was a cleaning crew coming? Perhaps not that day in particular, but that at some point they would be there? If so you made the mistake of not being paranoid enough. If I even though there was a chance some stranger would be coming into my room the door would be locked. I hope you get your money for the replacement or at least proper vengeance.

I knew they were coming today but I was told this afternoon when I'd be home to be around to watch them and tell them what they can and can't do. Otherwise my room stays locked 99% of the time, but today I was in a rush to get to court on time and just didn't lock it. They'll pay for it somehow.

1. Dont touch or clean the HDTV, dvd player, subwoofer, speakers.

I have a Battlezone arcade game and they've managed to put a bunch of candy in the quarter return thing where the coins fall into. They filled it up so good that I can't open the flap and just pull it out, I'll have to take things apart to get to it.

Aah man, I hate it when people touch my stuff, especially my DVDs. I have to be a little stingy because I've had incidents where the DVD was returned without the cover or the cover with no DVD inside! And I have a buddy who always takes my shit without asking (and he only takes the expensive stuff like my imports and box sets). Drives me nut!!!

Not messed up condition wise, but messed up... I let my brother borrow about 30 dvds/box sets a couple of months ago. He was going through a hard time and needed something to do to get his mind off things. When he was done watching all of them he gave them to my mom to bring back since she was headed out my way, instead she donated the entire thing to Goodwill because she looked at them and didnt like the content in some of them (probably Inside). The rest of them werent like walmart 5 dollar bin flavor, they were like Criterion The Third Man and MTV The State series. WTF.

I can relate to this. I don't loan anything out except to a few select friends for a reason: people simply won't care for my things as I do. When I lived at home and the cleaning lady came I always made sure my door was locked. Hell, I locked it 100% of the time, no exceptions. I'd be pissed as all Hell if I came home and found my Phantasm sphere in that condition.

Last year my sister and her family came to visit me -- and were floored to see my bookcases of DVDs. My nephew and niece were playing in the room and when they left they just kept giggling. Later that night I found a note they left calling me "Uncle Blockbuster" and that it was cool that I HAD my movies in alphabetical order. They challenged me to find over 30 movies that they moved around on the shelves (about 1400 on 4 bookcases). Actually had a good laugh over it, being that they devious enough to do this at ages 7 + 9.

I'm glad the rest of my family is careful with DVDs. They respect my choices and leave me alone. I also get them quite a few for much cheaper than they'd know how to find - I bought all the seasons of the Adventures of Superman and the Superman serials for my dad for about $30 total. He's waxing nostalgia about it and it's awesome.

I find this equal parts hilarious and creepy. Your own wife isn't allowed to touch your DVD's, and you lock them up just to make sure? Do you keep her tied up whenever you leave the house too? Do you ever ask her to "put the fucking lotion in the basket?"

This would really piss me off. Honestly, if my mom did this to me, I would make a trip to her house when she wasn't there (or at least not paying attention), take a bunch of her shit and go give it to Goodwill. A revenge donation.

Thankfully my GF is nuts about her books so she respect my movies and takes care of them. I do loan some to her family, but put them in 6 disc 'flipper' DVD cases so they can't screw up the original cases.

Had my family help me move some stuff a few years ago. My sister looks at my boxes of dvds and was apparently amazed that I owned classics/criterions and other good movies. Guess she thought I was more of a popcorn movie guy. Anyway, she decides to "borrow" a few of these during the move (I had no way of knowing what was taken or that she had taken any because of the boxes.) Once I unpacked everything I noticed quite a few dvds missing, including a few box sets. I phoned her up and she told me she borrowed some so I went over there. Apparently, she was babysitting a dog for a friend and the dog had chewed every dvd cover to shreds (I don't know how that dog survived ingesting all that paper/plastic) and any discs that did survive were scratched to hell and left in her huge "stacks" of discs. So pissed. I can still go over there every once in a while and find some of my movies when I'm looking through those stacks.

It's really the note that makes this anecdote cool. Without the note, they're just destructive brats. But with the note, they've acknowledged the scope of what you've done and tried to cleverly connect with it by having some harmless fun. I have to say, when I read this I made sure to see if yours was the signature that reads, "Bottom shelf has the Bond movies and porn." That would have made this even more perfect!

there is no point to have a large amount of films if you don't share them with others. i have 800+ dvds and two boxes of unopened films (one for DVDs and one for Blu's) that i don't have time to watch - why would i not let someone borrow something they want? seems crazy that you would rather it sit on the shelf then allow a friend or family member to borrow. every Saturday we have a triple feature night here and whoever is here always walk out with a handful of dvds and bring them back next week, turning people on to good film is my favorite thing about having a collection.

also to the poster, it's hard to feel sorry for you since you have cleaning people.

Let's see what your feelings are toward those pricey titles after a few drinking buddies return them two months later with trashed slipcovers and so many scuffs the player spits out the discs. 'Cause that's what most of the people I know will do with them. Oh, sure, they take good care of their own stuff, but mine? Forget it; they have jobs, they can buy or rent for themselves.

Unfair, since the OP emphasized that he did not hire the cleaning people.
