Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*
Total Count: 114
First Time Viewings (*): 95
Last Year's Count: 100
This Year's Goal: 101
October 1:
Alright, here we go. It's Midnight EST, so I'm starting. It feels weird to be watching at 11PM on the 30th here, but whatever. I'm going to start with the shortest thing I can watch and have it count. I just want to get on the board before I have to go to bed. I'm looking at it as an appetizer.
1. Masters of Horror: Cigarette Burns (2005, John Carpenter) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 1), Personal Collection
Not too bad I suppose. It being about a film was sure appropriate for kicking off the challenge, and it did it's job as far as getting me ready for more.
2. Teeth (2007, Mitchell Lichtenstein) *
DVD, Blockbuster Online
I love movies with weird things attacking people, and a vagina with teeth certainly fits the bill. It could have used more action though, it was a bit slow at times. At least Jess Weixler was nice to look at when things did slow down.
3. The Wolf Man (1941, George Waggner) *
DVD (The Wolf Man - The Legacy Collection), Personal Collection
4. Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror (2006, Stacy Title) *
DVD, Personal Collection
Tales from the Crypt with Snoop Dogg playing the Cryptkeeper and featuring Danny Trejo, Diamond Dallas Page, Jason Alexander and Ernie Hudson, among others. Yes, it's every bit as ridiculous as it sounds.
October 2:
5. Nightmare Castle (1965, Mario Caiano) *
DVD (Horror Movie Classics), Personal Collection
Make sure you don't watch an edited version like I just did. That was awful. Maybe next year I'll try to get the uncut version to watch.
6. Tales from the Crypt (1972, Freddie Francis) *
DVD (Midnite Movies Double Feature), Personal Collection
Very well done anthology. It probably could have stood to lose at least one segment so the others could be fleshed out a bit more though. Five in 90 minutes was really pushing it.
7. The Unborn (2009, David S. Goyer) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
Better than I expected. It's not great by any means, but it did get me a couple times. Demonic little kids always freak me out.
October 3:
8. Devil in the Flesh (1998, Steve Cohen)
DVD, Personal Collection
Rose McGowan makes this movie. The rest of the movie is mediocre at best, but her performance makes the cheesy script work.
9. Masters of Horror - Dreams in the Witch-House (2005, Stuart Gordon) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 1), Personal Collection
10. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943, Roy William Neill) *
DVD (The Wolf Man - The Legacy Collection), Personal Collection
11. Poltergeist (1982, Tobe Hooper) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
Excellent movie. I'm not sure how I had never seen it before.
October 4:
12. [Rec] (2007, Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza) *
DVD, Personal Collection
Ok, that creeped me the fuck out. Maybe I shouldn't have watched it right before trying to go to sleep. I've also got Quarantine in the queue for later in the month.
13. Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006, Lloyd Kaufman) *
DVD, Blockbuster Online
That was exactly how I pictured it.
14. She-Wolf of London (1946, Jean Yarbrough) *
DVD (The Wolf Man - The Legacy Collection), Personal Collection
Not a terrible movie, but it's not horror and it really doesn't belong in a Wolf Man set.
15. The Manitou (1978, William Girdler) *
DVD, Netflix
16. Masters of Horror: The Fair Haired Child (2006, William Malone) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 1), Personal Collection
The best of the Masters of Horror I've watched so far. It's got a good story and a few tense moments. I actually would have liked to see a feature length take on this.
October 5:
17. High Tension (2003, Alexandre Aja) *
DVD, Netflix
18. Werewolf of London (1935, Stuart Walker) *
DVD (The Wolf Man - The Legacy Collection), Personal Collection
Henry Hull is not as good a werewolf as Lon Chaney Jr.
19. House of 1000 Corpses (2003, Rob Zombie)
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
October 6:
20. Deadgirl (2008, Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel) *
DVD, Blockbuster Online
That was one twisted and depressing movie.
21. The Vault of Horror (1973, Roy Ward Baker) *
DVD (Midnite Movies Double Feature), Personal Collection
22. The Devil's Rejects (2005, Rob Zombie)
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
Still my favorite of the two in the series. I wouldn't mind seeing Zombie revisit these characters for a third movie.
23. Masters of Horror: Jenifer (Dario Argento) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 2), Personal Collection
October 7:
24. Grace (2009, Paul Solet) *
Blu-Ray, Blockbuster
25. Fido (2006, Andrew Currie) *
DVD, Personal Collection
Zombie Lassie.
October 8:
26. Hatchet (2006, Adam Green) *
DVD, Personal Collection
The effects are lacking and it doesn't present any new ideas, but damn is it a fun ride anyway.
27. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954, Jack Arnold) *
DVD (Creature from the Black Lagoon - The Legacy Collection), Personal Collection
I think this is my least favorite of the Universal Monsters.
28. Masters of Horror: Sick Girl (2006, Lucky McKee) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 2), Personal Collection
October 9:
29. Friday the 13th (2009, Marcus Nispel) *
Blu-Ray, Blockbuster
Better than I expected. There sure a lot of obnoxious assholes in the movie though, Jason is about the most likable character.
30. Storm Warning (2007, Jamie Blanks) *
DVD, Personal Collection
31. Slither (2006, James Gunn) *
HD-DVD, Personal Collection
32. The Strangers (2008, Bryan Bertino) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
I was really hooked at first but the longer it went on the more I started losing interest and wondering if anything would ever happen.
October 10:
33. The Burrowers (2008, J.T. Petty) *
DVD, Netflix
There should be more horror westerns.
34. The Little Shop of Horrors (1960, Roger Corman)
DVD (Directed by Roger Corman), Personal Collection
35. Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961, Roger Corman) *
DVD (Directed by Roger Corman), Personal Collection
Terrible...
36. Last Woman on Earth (1960, Roger Corman) *
DVD (Directed by Roger Corman), Personal Collection
Good premise, but suffers a bit from the things that plague all Corman movies. I'd actually like to see someone take a stab at a remake.
37. The Evil Dead (1981, Sam Raimi) *
Streaming, Netflix Watch Instantly
I have no idea how the hell I had never seen this, but I'm damn glad I finally changed that. Excellent.
October 11:
38. Baby Blues (2008, Lars Jacobsen and Amardeep Kaleka) *
DVD, Netflix
39. Countess Dracula (1971, Peter Sasdy) *
DVD (Midnite Movies Double Feature), Personal Collection
40. The Signal (2007, David Bruckner, Dan Bush and Jacob Gentry) *
Blu-Ray, Netflix
41. The Vampire Lovers (1970, Roy Ward Baker) *
DVD (Midnite Movies Double Feature), Personal Collection
42. Trick 'r Treat (2008, Michael Dougherty) *
Blu-Ray, Blockbuster Online
Slightly overhyped but excellent nonetheless.
October 12:
43. Rogue (2007, Greg McLean) *
DVD, Personal Collection
One of the better killer crocodile movies.
44. Masters of Horror: Deer Woman (2005, John Landis) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 2), Personal Collection
45. Turistas (2006, John Stockwell) *
DVD, Personal Collection
October 13:
46. Rest Stop (2006, John Shiban) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
47. Rest Stop: Don't Look Back (2008, Shawn Papazian) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
The sequel is the better of the two. I can't recommend either though.
48. Masters of Horror: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road (2005, Don Coscarelli) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 3), Personal Collection
I have a new favorite MoH episode. This one was great all the way through. Moonface needs his own series.
49. Masters of Horror: Dance of the Dead (2005, Tobe Hooper) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 3), Personal Collection
Boring. It started out looking alright, but then nothing happens. It just limped along for an hour then ended.
October 14:
50. The Oblong Box (1969, Gordon Hessler) *
DVD (Midnite Movies Double Feature), Personal Collection
51. Halloween (2007, Rob Zombie) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
I liked it. I'm not sure why everyone hates it so much, it's really not that bad.
October 15:
52. Evil Dead II (1987, Sam Raimi) *
Blu-Ray, Blockbuster Online
53. Heartstopper (2006, Bob Keen) *
DVD, Personal Collection
54. Masters of Horror: Pick Me Up (2006, Larry Cohen) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 3), Personal Collection
This series is very uneven. For every excellent entry there's one like this.
October 16:
55. 100 Feet (2008, Eric Red) *
Blu-Ray, Blockbuster
Interesting idea that works fairly well despite a few minor issues and a disappointing ending. It's worth a watch if you like ghost movies.
56. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003, Marcus Nispel) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
Not bad, but falls way short of the original in almost every way. The one way it tops the original? Jessica Biel.
57. Drag Me to Hell (2009, Sam Raimi) *
Blu-Ray, Netflix
Excellent.
October 17:
58. Scream and Scream Again (1970, Gordon Hessler) *
DVD (Midnite Movies Double Feature), Personal Collection
Good God, what a mess of a movie.
59. Scream (1996, Wes Craven)
Streaming, Netflix Watch Instantly
I love this movie. No matter how many times I've seen it over the years I never get tired of watching it. If we could only get a Blu-Ray release...
60. The Tripper (2006, David Arquette) *
DVD, Personal Collection
Worked better as a comedy than a horror. Given the absurd plot they should have cranked everything up and just gone completely over the top.
October 18:
61. The Midnight Meat Train (2008, Ryuhei Kitamura) *
Blu-Ray, Netflix
Great movie if you can look past a bad ending. I won't spoil anything, but the ending makes no sense whatsoever.
62. Masters of Horror: Imprint (2006, Takashi Miike) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 4), Personal Collection
Underwhelming, like everything I've seen of Miike's.
63. Soul Survivors (2001, Stephen Carpenter) *
DVD, Personal Collection
64. The Toxic Avenger (1984, Lloyd Kaufman) *
Streaming, Netflix Watch Instantly
65. Undead or Alive (2007, Glasgow Phillips) *
Streaming, Netflix Watch Instantly
Brian Posehn is an excellent zombie.
October 19:
66. Night of the Living Dead (1968, George A. Romero) *
DVD (Horror Movie Classics), Personal Collection
I'm a bit ashamed to say I've never seen any of Romero's movies.
67. The Amityville Horror (2005, Andrew Douglas) *
DVD, Personal Collection
Ryan Reynolds performance really elevates what would otherwise be a mediocre movie.
68. TerrorVision (1986, Ted Nicolaou) *
Streaming, FEARNet
Words can't begin to explain this movie. Just watch it.
October 20:
69. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006, Scott Glosserman) *
Streaming, Netflix Watch Instantly
Little disappointed by the final act, but overall an enjoyable movie.
70. Wrong Turn (2003, Rob Schmidt)
DVD, Personal Collection
October 21:
71. Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (2007, Joe Lynch)
Blu-Ray, Netflix
Henry Rollins is awesome.
72. Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead (2009, Declan O'Brien) *
Blu-Ray, Netflix
Weakest of the three in the series. It doesn't have any characters that really stand out, and a few are actually downright horrible, and it suffers as a result.
73. Army of Darkness (1992, Sam Raimi) *
Blu-Ray, Netflix
74. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920, John S. Robertson) *
DVD (Horror Movie Classics), Personal Collection
John Barrymore's performance was excellent, and the transformation effects better than I expected, but there were definitely times I found myself getting a bit bored.
October 22:
75. Dawn of the Dead (1978, George A. Romero) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
76. Masters of Horror: Homecoming (2005, Joe Dante) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 4), Personal Collection
Only four years and this already feels dated.
77. Masters of Horror: Haeckel's Tale (2006, John McNaughton) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 4), Personal Collection
October 23:
78. Near Dark (1987, Kathryn Bigelow) *
DVD, Blockbuster Online
Not the Lost Boys ripoff it sounds like at first, but not as good as it could have been either.
79. The Fly (1986, David Cronenberg) *
Blu-Ray, Blockbuster Online
Jeff Goldblum is excellent in this. Movie's not so bad either.
80. I Bury the Living (1958, Albert Band) *
DVD (Midnite Movies), Personal Collection
October 24:
81. The Uninvited (2009, Charles Guard and Thomas Guard) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
82. The Dunwich Horror (1970, Daniel Haller) *
DVD (Midnite Movies Double Feature), Personal Collection
83. Masters of Horror: Chocolate (2005, Mick Garris) *
Blu-Ray (Masters of Horror, Season 1 Volume 4), Personal Collection
Definitely one of the weaker entries in the series. I can't think of anything this had aside from eye candy.
84. Vampyr (1932, Carl Theodor Dreyer) *
Streaming, Netflix Watch Instantly
85. Hellraiser (1987, Clive Barker) *
Blu-Ray, Netflix
October 25:
86. Quarantine (2008, John Erick Dowdle) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
No where near as good as [Rec]. Watching them so close together probably didn't help though.
87. Sublime (2007, Tony Krantz) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
88. Die, Monster, Die! (1965, Daniel Haller) *
DVD (Midnite Movies Double Feature), Personal Collection
89. The Wasp Woman (1959, Roger Corman) *
DVD (Directed by Roger Corman), Personal Collection
90. Zombi 2 (1979, Lucio Fulci) *
Streaming, Netflix Watch Instantly
Zombie vs Shark!
91. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920, Robert Wiene) *
DVD (Horror Movie Classics), Personal Collection
October 26:
92. Horror Hotel (1960, John Llewellyn Moxey) *
DVD (Horror Movie Classics), Personal Collection
93. The Last House on the Left (1972, Wes Craven) *
DVD, Netflix
94. The Terror (1963, Roger Corman) *
DVD (Horror Movie Classics), Personal Collection
95. The Burning (1981, Tony Maylam) *
Streaming, FEARNet
Even though he's young I still can't see anything but Costanza when I look at Jason Alexander.
October 27:
96. Happy Birthday to Me (1981, J. Lee Thompson) *
DVD, Personal Collection
97. Saturday Night Live: Halloween [Wildcard #1]
DVD, Personal Collection
98. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966, Bill Melendez) [Wildcard #2]
TV, ABC-HD
It's not Halloween without at least one viewing of this.
99. Final Destination (2000, James Wong) *
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
My 31 Films subset pick.
October 28:
100. Sleepaway Camp (1983, Robert Hiltzik)
DVD, Blockbuster Online
That ending is a shock even if you know it's coming.
101. Maximum Overdrive (1986, Stephen King)
DVD, Personal Collection
So much cheese you shouldn't watch if your lactose intolerant. I love it though.
October 29:
102. The Hills Have Eyes (1977, Wes Craven) *
DVD, Netflix
103. April Fool's Day (1986, Fred Walton) *
DVD, Netflix
October 30:
104. The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror XX [Wildcard #3] *
TV, Fox-HD
Anyone get the feeling that after 20 episodes and 60 segments they might be out of ideas?
105. Hostel (2005, Eli Roth) *
Blu-Ray, Blockbuster Online
I'm torn. I hated the first half, but the second half I was hooked.
106. Shaun of the Dead (2004, Edgar Wright)
DVD, Personal Collection
One of my personal favorites.
107. Black Sheep (2006, Jonathan King)
DVD, Personal Collection
Very funny movie. Even the premise of killer sheep makes me laugh.
October 31:
108. The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick)
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
109. Frankenstein (1931, James Whale)
DVD (Universal Legacy Series), Personal Collection
110. Dracula (1931, Tod Browning)
DVD (Universal Legacy Series), Personal Collection
111. Halloween (1978, John Carpenter)

DVD (Universal Legacy Series), Personal Collection
November 1 Pre-Dawn:
113. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974, Tobe Hooper)
Blu-Ray, Personal Collection
Every time I watch this I'm left with such an uneasy feeling.
114. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975, Jim Sharman)
DVD (25th Anniversary Edition), Personal Collection
I have to watch this every Halloween. Avoid the audience participation track on the DVD.
