Yeah, they basically show you that they tried it on some waste land (the same bit of land they built the hospital on) and just used a modified truck. The street they used for the flip was interesting. It was in the financial district and they had to be careful where the fired the ram as all the banks had their vaults underneath the streets. Along with all the manhole covers I think they only had 2 firing places.
They also talk about the editing. The editor said if they done a stunt like that in the 80/90s he would use about 7 different angles and show you each one, just to make the scene longer.
He said nowadays you don't really need those cuts. Abit like the hospital explosion. It's only shown in 3 angles/cuts.

The Bluray has some damn fine featurettes on the making of the film. Talks a bit too about the IMAX filming.

I was excited to see this because I've always loved GI Joe, unfortunately I was a little disappointed with the movie. I saw it at midnight when it came out which always makes movies a little better but I did like how they set up for more films afterward if they decide to make them.

Because they were featured so prominently in the trailers, everyone got their panties in a twist that they'd be wearing them the whole movie.
From the beginning I was all for the suits. They just looked cool, and they seemed like something right out of the GI Joe arsenal. Not to mention there are already far stupider vehicles in that universe.

Tomorrow the search will continue.
p.s. I rated the movie 4 stars. I had low expectations and came out enjoying it.

Just saw this. A nice set up but once you get past the hour mark it turns into a CGI fest and the characters go nowhere. Another Mindless Hollywood Blockbuster.

G.I. JOE 2
According to Collider, a writer has been hired to create an initial draft for a sequel to last summer's "G.I Joe: the Rise of Cobra." Details are pretty sketchy and Collider has not yet learn the name of the writer involved. Is this more of Mysterio's work or the first rumblings of a sequel? Only time, and Cobra, can tell.

Inevitable news, but glad to hear it. Had subterranean expectations for the first film and came out thinking it was pretty entertaining. Hopefully they can fit in some of the classic vehicles. Also look forward to a larger role for Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
I still hold that Channing Tatum is the most boring leading man in recent memory.

I hope they kill off Duke in the next one and let Sam Worthington be the lead as Flint or anyone else.

I said it before, and I'll say it again... recast Duke with Jensen Ackles.

I just saw this and boy is it full of unfulfilled promise; the opening scene was awesome but the movie could not recover from it. There was a great care done in getting the look(the blue/red weapon fire, the weapons, the suits, the aircraft, the facilities all top notch but shitty CGI) and the sounds were equally as great but there was a complete lack of direction/miscasting and terrible framing as to where and how the action was occurring in the final act. Just because everyone in that film has a HUD or Radar device to tell them where an enemy is, do not expect the lack of information on screen to translate to the audience.
I do think they can make a very good sequel if they get someone who knows how to frame action like Tony Scott, Nimrod Antal, or if John McTiernan isn't in prison at the time.

I still can't believe people gave this film 5 stars?

For shame...you have no credibility.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. It isn't high art but was fun. And the action was easy to follow for me.
Of course, I'm guessing the Tony Scott suggestion was meant as a joke. He makes Michael Bay's directing/editing style look like that of Sergio Leone.

Well I don't like "Shaky-cam" and Tony Scott has devolved from his earlier work into that foray, but as I was watching the underwater sequence, I thought about how he could do a better job as he did in Crimson Tide.
I just thought that it was poor, specifically that final sequence underwater; if it had to be under an icepack, why not have it during the day with it acting as a natural skylight of sorts? Or you could have the seabed illuminated once intruders were detected? As a straight comparison of material, even if it is a cartoon, the beginning of GI Joe The Movie had a great take on how to show multiple battles that are inherent in any "squadron" story when you break it down between the overall force and the individual components.
Not trying to make it an issue of high-art, but better direction would have made for an awesome film as opposed to the meh feeling I took away from watching it. I also did like the Paris scene, that was pretty good.

I dunno. I found everything underwater easy to see and follow (it certainly wasn't too dark). However, I found it disappointing that adult Storm Shadow and adult Snake Eyes never had a fight as good as their younger selves. And I felt the final action sequences should have been shortened whereas the final fight of SS and SE should have been extended. My only other complaint is that JGL was better as the Doctor than as Cobra Commander. It's the cheesy booming voice and the Jason X mask. It just didn't work.

Re: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Sommers, 2009) — The Reviews Thread
I definitely agree that the final SS/SE fight paled in comparison to the first one and I that's what I was trying to get across in my first post, the final "duals" were always upstaged by things that had occurred earlier in the film. It wasn't so much an increase in action as much as an increase in scale and it never worked as much as it could have.
And yeah, the Doctor was a better character than Cobra Commander, something that I again place as a fault of Sommers. As a director, he should have known that it wouldn't work, just like many of the takes by better actors like Saïd Taghmaoui were just bad in a "first take is the last take" sort of way.

Well the script was being written as they were shooting. This film fell prey to the writer's strike and Sommers did the best he could.
In fact, originally as scripted the Baroness spent the final act of the movie in a coma, General Hawk didn't even have any scenes during the final action sequence, and there was supposed to be a ridiculously long action sequence with Duke in Cobra Commander's sub. Stuart Beattie rewrote the third act on the fly so it wasn't just Ripcord in the air and Duke carrying around a comatose Baroness. As for the fight in the sub, Sommers chose to change it for the "my army" scene because he felt there was too much action in the finale and he wanted to scale things back.
So given what he had to work with, I applaud the result. I just hope they make the sequel even better now that they have time to work out the kinks in the script before shooting begins.

One of the easiest ways to make the sequel better would be to recast Channing Tatum. Also, fix some of the terrible special effects.
