Is it normal for a Blu-ray player to be noisy?
I picked up a Sony Blu-ray player (BDP-BX2, Sam's and Costco's model of the BDP-S360) a few weeks ago, and it seems noisy compared to my older DVD player. When loading a disc, or for a few secs when the player is first turned on you can hear the drive making a "reading" noise. It sounds like the lens is moving back and forth. I doesn't do this during playback. Its not very loud, but noticeable from a few feet away from the TV.
Movies seem to playback fine (only had a chance to watch a few), but I'm concerned about the noise. I went back to the store and tired to see if the demo unit did this, but with the noise of the store I couldn't tell.
Are Blu-ray drives generally more noisy than DVD drives?

The noise I'm hearing is very similar to the noise in this video when the game is first loaded into the PS3. Not sure if should be hearing that or not.

Re: Is it normal for a Blu-ray player to be noisy?
Firstly your PS3 isn't loud, in fact my elite xbox 360 is louder and Ive never had a single problem with it. Secondly, I'm not to sure If blu-ray drives are naturally noisier then DVD drives, however If this helps I have tested a demo blu-ray player hooked up to a HD TV a couple of times in the Good Guys, and even I noticed the player made a ever so slightly louder noise when I went to load the disc. This was one of those original Sony models it was however brand new through. Anyway I'm not a expect in this field since I havnt upgraded to blu-ray nor HD itself, but from my past store experiences it seems to be almost normal from the prospective I saw it from...

Mr. Salty, If you click the link you will see that hes posted a video about whether or not his PS3 is to loud. The first part of my comment was just a answer to that particular problem..

That's not my PS3. I have a BDP-BX2. The noise the PS3 is making in the video is the same type of noise that my BDP-BX2 makes when loading a disc. I couldn't find an example of a Sony player doing this, just the PS3.

Oh.. I had just assumed that since the video is labeled "Is my PS3 loud" that you posted it with your youtube account.. Anyway, like I said that PS3 isn't even that loud, so If that's the noise your hearing on your blu-ray player I wouldn't worry to much about it. The demo model I saw at the store was in fact louder..

My S350 makes a noticible "reading" (searching?) noise when I first insert a disc and it's looking for the menu screen or whatever, but then it's quiet, including during movie playback. If you are talking about a sound like that, I wouldn't worry.

This was a precursor to one of my Blu-ray players starting to skip or freeze, or even introduce disc vibration sounds during playback. I'm not saying this is probably going to happen to you, it most likely won't. However, if you just bought the thing it couldn't hurt to return it and say that it doesn't sound 'healthy'. If the next one you buy does the same thing, shrug it off as the way it runs, or return it. There's no shame in asking for an exchange. You better hurry if you bought it a few weeks ago though. I don't generally think Blu-ray players should make a lot of noise in the way you're describing. It may be nothing, but better safe than sorry man.
