500 Days of Summer (Webb, 2009): Zooey Deschanel & Joseph Gordon-Levitt

I saw this last night so I'm bumping this thread. I agree pretty much with Suprmallet on this, and by extension, Giles. Yes, Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel make a cute couple, but that's not enough to carry the movie for me, and in general it was not a lot more than a collection of tired cliches. I'd give this a 2/5 - I managed to sit through the whole thing without too much complaint, but I certainly have no desire to see it again.

I was finally able to catch this one on HBO a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Probably because JGL's character hit so close to home (minus all the sweater vests of course). I've been in the situation of a girl telling me she isn't relationship material, only to see her get married within the next year.
I guess that's why I felt that Summer was a major bitch in this movie (even though I love me some Zooey). It made me reflect upon some of my own exes and made me glad I'm not with them. I'm glad he didn't end up with her. You always see the person you're with through rose colored glasses until you meet someone new.

I actually found Deschanel's character to be a bit dead, so I dont get why people are raving about the chemistry between the two leads.
Is the non-linear sequencing why people love this movie?

I think one reason is that this is a "conventional" romantic comedy told from the male protagonist point of view.

Finally saw this last night. I really liked it. A lot of it hit really close to home for me and reminded me a lot of my first love and how that relationship went south. It actually brought back enough painful memories to mess up my sleep pretty well last night.
It's maybe not a perfect movie, but I think it does a lot of things right. Summer is supposed to be flawed and Tom just doesn't see it, so I think Zooey did a great job in the role. She's supposed to be at least a little dead emotionally. But as my wife correctly pointed out, I probably just have a thing for her so I can't really be objective here.
Anyway, great film in my book.
