Wonderful commentary. Francis Ford Coppola really tells it all and includes all of the behind the scenes stuff with the problems with the studio and how out of his element he felt at times. It's hard to believe that this absolute classic almost had its director fired.

4. Face/Off (1998) - [HD DVD Commentary* - Writers]
Nominee: Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing
How odd. This was the full commentary of just the writers, for which they cut portions of this commentary into the other commentary. I could tell that something was up with the change in sound on the other commentary.

5. The Godfather: Part II (1974) - [Blu-Ray]
Winner: Best Picture

At one time, I think I was a bigger fan of this movie that The Godfather. This is an absolutely wonderful movie, but I will definitely have to go with the original. I really wish they could have signed Marlon Brando to show up at the end.

7. Saturday Night Fever (1977)* - [HDNet Movies]
Nominee: Best Actor in a Leading Role
I had never seen this movie and it was good, but it was not all what I expected. I thought it was going to be more about the dancing and John Travolta's rise to the disco world. I don't know why that was ingrained in my mind. Nonetheless, the solo dance scene with Travolta was awesome.

8. Being John Malkovich (1999) - [HDNet Movies]
Nominee: Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Nominee: Best Director
Nominee: Best Original Screenplay
I've always liked this movie, it's so different and unique. The acting is superb and the script definitely makes it enthralling.

Amazing movie. Amazing music. The first time in a while I have been blown away after watching a movie.

10. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) - [DVD]
Winner: Best Art Direction
Winner: Best Sound Effects Editing

Nomination: Best Picture
Nomination: Best Sound
Nomination: Best Original Score

This is the Indiana Jones I enjoy watching the most. I just love the ending and getting to the grail. "You have chosen...wisely"

11. Jerry McGuire (1996) - [DVD]
Winner: Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Nomination: Best Picture
Nomination: Best Actor in a Leading Role
Nomination: Best Film Editing
Nomination: Best Picture
Nomination: Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen

I haven't seen this for quite some time. It is definitely a good movie. I have never been the biggest Renee Zellweger fan, but she was just about right in her role. For some reason I had the famous line "You had me at hello" said by Tom Cruise in my mind. I didn't finish the commentary until after the challenge, but what a major disappointment. Cameron Crowe needs to do solo commentaries. Having the actors there was a clusterfuck to be honest.

12. The 81st Annual Academy Awards Ceremony (2009) - [ABCHD]
I liked the toned down style of the awards. Loved the opening number by Hugh Jackman, very well done. No one got cut off big . Really only cared about Heath Ledger winning Best Supporting Actor, so that was good. Didn't have a favorite for Best Picture. I had only seen Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button. Benjamin Button was a big letdown for me and Slumdog Millionaire blew me away, so I guess I was happy that they won, but it wouldn't have broken my heart if they didn't.

Re: The 3rd Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge ***LISTS GO HERE***

Goal: 20 first time viewings
To Date: 18 first time viewings

January 22nd
1. The Godfather (1972) - * First Time Viewing
Winner: Best Picture
Winner: Best Actor in a Leading Role - Marlin Brando
Winner: Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Nominee: Best Actor in a Supporting Role - James Caan
Nominee: Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Al Pacino
Nominee: Best Directing - Francis Ford Coppola
Nominee: Best Costume Design
Nominee: Best Film Editing
Nominee: Best Music, Original Dramatic Score
Nominee: Best Sound

This Challenge is going to be the way I finally go back and watch movies I should have watched way before now. The Godfather seemed like the logical starting point. The fact I have never seen this movie has haunted me for years but I just never found time to fit in an almost 3 hour epic. Now I'm glad I did as I see the amazing piece of art that Coppola and the rest put together.

January 23rd
2. The Godfather Part II (1974) - * First Time Viewing
Winner: Best Picture
Winner: Best Actor In A Supporting Role - Robert De Niro
Winner: Best Directing - Francis Ford Coppola
Winner: Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Winner: Best Music, Original Dramatic Score
Winner: Best Art Direction
Nominee: Best Actor - Al Pacino
Nominee: Best Actor In A Supporting Role - Michael V. Gazzo
Nominee: Best Actor In A Supporting Role - Lee Strasberg
Nominee: Best Actress In A Supporting Role - Talia Shire
Nominee: Best Costume Design

Having 3 of the 5 Supporting actor nominations and 5 of the 20 total acting nominations coming from 1 movie should show how much the academy liked this movie. I thought it wasn't quite as intriguing as the first but was still an amazing piece of cinema.

January 24th
3. The Godfather Part III (1990) - * First Time Viewing
Nominee: Best Picture
Nominee: Best Actor In A Supporting Role - Andy Garcia
Nominee: Best Directing - Francis For Coppola
Nominee: Best Art Direction
Nominee: Best Cinematography
Nominee: Best Film Editing
Nominee: Best Original Song - "Promise Me You Will Remember"

Finishing the Godfather trilogy today. The movie was the worst of the 3 but still a good movie. I don't think it would have got all the nominations if it didn't have the name "Godfather" in the title

January 25th
4. Trainspotting (1996) - * First Time Viewing
Nominee: Best Adapted Screenplay

January 31st
5. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - * First Time Viewing
Winner: Best Art Direction
Winner: Best Film Editing
Winner: Best Sound
Winner: Best Visual Effects
Winner: Special Achievement Award (Sound Editing)
Nominee: Best Picture
Nominee: Best Directing
Nominee: Best Cinematography
Nominee: Best Original Score

Finished a classic series last weekend and starting another this weekend. Another series of films that I missed due to my age that I am ashamed of. Great, great movie that really aged well;

February 1st
6. Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom (1984) - * First Time Viewing
Winner: Best Visual Effects
Nominee: Best Original Score

Good film. I still wonder how these first 2 Indiana Jones films got a PG rating. Even with no PG-13 I would think they would lead to an R rather then a PG but I guess that's an example of the MPAA's messed up system.

February 2nd
7. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (1989) - * First Time Viewing
Winner: Best Sound Effects Editing
Nominee: Best Original Score
Nominee: Best Sound

February 5th
8. In Bruges (2009) - * First Time Viewing
Nominee: Best Original Screenplay
Very good movie, very dark comedy but it is Colin Ferrell's best performance in years.

February 8th
9. Into The Wild (2008) - * First Time Viewing
Nominee: Best Editing
Nominee: Best Supporting Actor - Hal Holbrook

Great performances lead this movie. Too bad I'm falling behind on my already conservative goal for this challenge .

February 10th
10. TRON (1982) - * First Time Viewing
Nominee: Best Costume Design (Should have won)
Nominee: Best Sound

February 11th
11. WarGames (1984) - * First Time Viewing
Nominee: Best Cinematography
Nominee: Best Sound
Nominee: Best Original Screenplay

12. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2009) - * First Time Viewing
Nominee: Best Supporting Actress - Penelope Cruz

February 13th
13. The Usual Suspects (1995) - * First Time Viewing
Winner: Best Supporting Actor - Kevin Spacey
Winner: Best Original Screenplay

February 17th
14. Changeling (2009) - * First Time Viewing
