He'll have to fight using more fluid, non-impact forms of martial arts... something like judo, aikido, wing chun.

It should be interesting because that's taking away what really put him on the map.. his Muay Thai.

Re: Ong Bak 2 in trouble - Tony Jaa is nowhere to be found

first, the movie sucks major ass - it is boring and awful
Second, Tony Jaa is totally overrated and not as kick-ass impressive anymore, he's a painfully awful actor, and he has the worst voice ever.
Third, I'm gonna shoot myself if I see another Thai action movie with some dude jumping around some elephant

Ong Bak 2: The Beginning will premiere on HDNet Movies in October.
http://www.hd.net/movies_sneakpreviews.html

Directed by: Tony Jaa
Written by: Panna Rittikrai
Starring: Tony Jaa, Sorapong Chatree, and Sarunyu Wongkrachang .

Set in medieval Thailand, this prequel features Ong Bak's Tony Jaa as a young nobleman who masters many martial arts disciplines in his journey of revenge. Expect stand-up-in-your-seat excitement as Jaa flies through the air; twisting, turning and demonstrating the utmost contempt for the laws of gravity. And now that he has added a full range of martial-arts styles to his repertoire, Jaa is twice as deadly and twice as exciting.

The first Ong Bak hit the world like a heat-seeking guided missile. A missile in the shape of Tony Jaa, touted as the new Bruce Lee and the can't-miss martial-arts superstar of his generation.

Ong Bak 2: The Beginning is the HDNet Movies Sneak Preview for October, 2009. It premieres Wednesday, October 21st at 8 PM ET, with encore presentations at 10 and midnight Eastern Time that same night.

Re: Ong Bak 2 in trouble - Tony Jaa is nowhere to be found

Just came back from a screening of the movie on the Toronto International Film Festival. I think that the same criticisms of his previous movies, apply to Ong Bak 2 as it has a predictable plot and lousy editing (do we really need to see how he got himself caught by the slave traders twice in the movie).

However, the fighting is top notch even though Tony Jaa actually uses different styles of martial arts and pay homage to other martial arts styles (although you keep wondering why Zatoichi is doing in medieval Thailand).

And is true, the movie ends on a cliffhanger.

If there's a sequel to this movie, please no more elephants, PRETTY PLEASE.

Even though I didn't dig the first flick, I'll DVR this one just so that I can FF through to the cool fight scenes.

I'm not saying it's not well physically well executed but...I feel nothing for this fight, it lacks substance. Tony Jaa is too much flash and not enough to sell his fights better however talented he is.

Re: Ong Bak 2 in trouble - Tony Jaa is nowhere to be found

I know what you mean, Solid Snake PAC. Tony Jaa has some serious skills but I fail to connect with any of his movies. There's just something off about the way the action is staged. And it doesn't help that the plots of his movies are pure shit.

It's sad that Chocolate is a much better movie than anything he's been in lately given the young lady in the lead role is nowhere as skilled as he is. Still, in that movie I had a lot of fun watching the fights and I was actually invested in the storyline (a few narrative hiccups notwithstanding).

I hope Jee ja will be returned to us in two or three years. There were a lot of things that she did very well in Chocolate. The biggest let down was the portrayal of power. She doesn't have a tenth demonstrated by Tony Ja. If this could be developed in a few years Jee ja could be a force to watch.

Here's hoping.

As far as Tony Ja goes ..so far my favorite film of his remains to be Tom Yum Goong (The Protector). Forgive the ridiculous plot; the long tracking and temple fight scenes were highly entertaining.

Re: Ong Bak 2 in trouble - Tony Jaa is nowhere to be found

I liked the tracking shot in theory but not in execution. The reason it doesn't work for me is because he's suddenly very slow during that sequence. I'm sure he's was simply trying not to screw it up since it was all one take but his slowness throughout that whole sequence took me right out of it. But the temple fight, even if rather random, was quite badass.

Re: Ong Bak 2 in trouble - Tony Jaa is nowhere to be found

Really? I hated that long tracking shot. It just...eh. I thought it was just a Tony Jaa way of trying to prove he was badass aka a proverbial jerking off session. Again, I don't doubt his physicality, just his execution of it on film. Tony Jaa I think is dead. He's lost it. Whatever flame he had at that start with Ong Bak is way down now. Chocalate on the other hand is a route I hope to see more often in utilizing female characters kicking ass...and do their own stunts.

to be more exact...I agree with everything RocShemp said.

also adding on earlier in my HK thread it was said that sometimes girls can't do what guys can do stunt wise..this film kinda proves that girls can..although this isn't HK it's Thailand...but still...girls kicking ass in this era is so so rare, and to add in that it's hard to just really believe it's them is always refreshing to see someone like Jee Ja.

Re: Ong Bak 2 in trouble - Tony Jaa is nowhere to be found

I really liked it. The downer tone and simplified (more so than usual for an action film) story approach was really interesting.

My only complaint is that they should have confidently stuck to the minimalism a little more. Seriously, they could have made a neat art-action movie with zero dialogue and I doubt viewers would have been lost in the slightest.

Re: Ong Bak 2 in trouble - Tony Jaa is nowhere to be found

That's too bad. The tracking shot was an interesting idea for a film such as this. Yes, it pulls the viewer out of the fight for a few minutes, but it offers a different take than what's normally expected. It was like one continuous cue ball shot bouncing around a pool table ...and watching a guy x2 get thrown from the winding stair case 30-40' up was outrageous. (the Thai stuntmen of today are giving the HK stuntmen of old a serious run) But like it or not when it was over there was more or less a payoff. And It's not like there weren't enough other more personal fight scenes in the film.

I like the different ideas used - like the "wheelie" fight, which I figure more people would have problems with than the tracking sequence due to its sheer silliness. Again, I enjoyed it. Who knows, maybe I just approach these types of films differently.

But I agree with you Solid Snake on Chocolate. It's far superior (in narrative terms at least) than anything Jaa's been in and makes for a great showcase of Yanin's up and coming talents. Can't wait for more.

Really? I thought that fall was "ok". It's just not shot well to sell the danger of it. HK of the past have The Protector and Thai stuntmen beat like a whore atm. Not to say i'm not amazed by their work but...they still have a way to go to top HK of the 80s.

Rypro, you mean Ong Bak the first film? because most retailers show Ong Bak 2 as a Feb release.

Re: Ong Bak 2 in trouble - Tony Jaa is nowhere to be found

I watched this tonight and thought it was terrible. I just watched The Protector a few days ago and it put this movie to shame.

None of the fight scenes had me saying "damn!" like his other two.
