The Jesus thing especially kills me. The dude was killed for being as progressive as he was. So many conservatives claim to speak for him and yet look at the platforms of the two parties.
Of the two, which one wants to care for the poor, the sick, the "sinners"... which one proposes conflict resolution through diplomacy?
Now ask yourself which one is about greed, xenophobia, condemnation and judgement, class systems and maintaining the status quo?
I keep looking for a copy of the "conservative bible." You know, the one where Jesus told the beggers to pull themselves up by their bootstraps; the one where he called the apostles hippes and told them to get jobs; the one in which he beaned the adulteress is the head with a chunk of granite without a moment's hesitation for destroying "family values;' The one where he said, "It is no more or less difficult to get into heaven for a rich man... in fact it helps... a lot... get rich... and eliminate the death tax!"

Why, when Jesus is the supposed model, is there such a "hurray for me, fuck you" mindset with regard to the poor and the downtrodden? Are we not our brother's keeper? Must we not do unto them as if it was Jesus being brought up in West Philly, using 20-year-old textbooks and dodging gunfire on the way to a crumbling school?
Why must patriotism and national pride necessarilly mean the derision of other countries? Did Jesus ever say, "F*ck the Romans... they're just a bunch of wine-drinking Imperials. They've got thousands of Hoplites, all armed with Ballistas and they're all pointing right at us! And don't even get me started on the Samaratians... bunch of lazy, uncaring Philistines! If you like them so much, why don't you go live with them!"

Jefferson was a liberal.
Liberals authored the Declaration of Independence.
Liberals ended slavery.
Liberals fought to give women the vote.
Liberals fought the civil rights movement.
Liberals struggled to educate society in science and math, to better understand our place in not just the world, but the universe.
Liberals push for medical advancement to help the spinally-injured walk.
Liberals beg for aid to help Africa rid themselves of the terrible plague of HIV devestating the continent.
Liberals are trying to get us off oil and onto clean, renewable (and cheap) energy that will both save us money AND save our environment.
You know what conservatives did? They fought EVERY SINGLE ONE of those goals. They resisted tooth-and-nail the whole way.
So in closing, NO - I don't think if you agree with Senator Obama's "liberal views" that you are retarded. I think that the negative connotation with which you spit the word "liberal" out means that you don't understand the word, the history of the people it describes, or the message of the most famous liberal to ever live who you claim to worship.
