Fox pulls 24 from lineup

http://tv.ign.com/articles/833/833560p1.html

FOX has released a revised lineup for the 2007 - 2008 television season, and 24 is not a part of it. This wasn't completely unexpected, as the network and the show's producers were said to be strongly considering not running the show at all this season, given the current writers strike. With only about 8 episodes completed (some reports say 9), the show, which is centered around their heavily serialized, 24 episode format, would be extremely off-balance were they to simply run those finished episodes now and then have fans go through a prolonged wait until the rest of the season was completed and ready to air. As the FOX press release puts it: "24 PREMIERE POSTPONED TO ENSURE 'DAY 7' PROVIDES NON-STOP ACTION"

The last 24 episode ran in May, so fans will hardly be excited to hear they will now have to wait an indeterminate time to get new episodes. With the length of the strike unknown, it's impossible to say yet whether the show would now come back in the fall, or perhaps not until early 2009. 24 was renewed through Season 8 earlier this year and Season 7 was currently in production. Assuming the episodes shot next season will now consist of the remainder of "Day 7" rather than "Day 8", it's unknown whether these events would result in the show adding another year of production on to their current deal or if "Day 8" may no longer occur, unless an additional renewal happens.

The two night premiere of 24 was to run January 13th and 14th, but Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (already slated to debut on January 14th) will now instead become a two-night event.

Not surprising. Although, with new show development probably stunted too, I wouldn't be surprised to see it premiere in the fall.

I would also not be surprised to see a similar announcement for LOST soon.

The Lost producers told TV Guide that if the strike moves into 2008, it'll probably be 2009 before we see any new episodes. They only have 8 in the can and don't want to air another "mini season".

You feel the writers shouldn't be compensated for their work? Oooookay.

I'd really be surprised if they ran it in the fall, since they can't do the "non-stop" thing at that time without running into the holidays. So it looks like 2009 unless the strike wraps up soon.

If both sides let this thing drag on into the new year, I'm not gonna feel sorry for any of them when the TV viewing public gives them the finger and moves on to alternative forms of entertainment(like reading, God forbid).

considering the amount of recycled plot lines it shouldn't be that hard to cobble together the rest of the season.

Kiefer is going to be sitting in a jail cell for 18 days next month and needs to complete 30 more days before July hits. The longer this strike drags on, the more likely there could be conflicts in their shooting schedule with his jail schedule (that's if it gets resolved in early 2008)

Actually, I'd thank the WGA strike if it means I don't have to sit through another season of 24 like the last one.

Yeah, maybe this will give them time to scrap the episodes already filmed and come up with a better idea than the sci-fi fantasy of Tony still being alive.

Why does 24 need writers? They can just have a computer program fill in a template based on previous seasons:

Jack: Chloe, I need you to use $technobabble to locate $terrorist before he can use $WMD in Los Angeles.

Chloe: But Jack, $CTU_employee just turned out to be a mole working for $foreign_government, and $president ordered $government_agency to take over, and replaced $CTU_head with $bureaucratic_dickwee. And by the way, your $person_close_to_Jack is in $unlikely_predicament.

Jack: Dammit!
