How does Amazon deal with defective DVDs?

When they send you the replacement, do they actually remove the shrinkwrap like some other stores do?

No, they send you a normal package just like the first one. Why would a company remove the shrinkwrap on a replacement?

B&M stores remove the shrinkwrap so that you cannot return it later for a refund.

Wal-Mart certainly has this policy. I returned a DVD there once and watched in horror as the sales lady pulled out a foot long metal file and began ripping the plastic wrap from my replacement copy. She worked so fast I couldn't really stop her, I just winced.

The case was pretty mangled, so much so that I exchanged it once again and convinced a different clerk to let me remove the wrapping myself.

Oh OK, I was generally just thinking of which online stores do that instead of B&Ms.
