DVD Burner question

I want to buy a DVD burner, but it is not an HD DVD Burner. I am hoping that this is not too stupid a question, but what happens if I try to burn a broadcast that is being shown in HD with a non-hd DVD burner, will it at least burn a dvd of good quality?
thanks in advance for any info.

Are you talking about a burner (for the computer) or a DVD recorder (similar to a VCR). If you record a show broadcast in HD on a DVD recorder, it will play back anamorphic widescreen on a widescreen TV. I record sporting events all the time that way and I love it. It won't be HD, of course, but the quality is still quite good.

Or you can burn it in HD DVD or Blu Ray format to a regular DVD-9 and it WILL be in HD, but will only play on your HD DVD or Blu Ray player.
