$100 price drop on the PS3. Interesting. Are we sure that this is the 60GB?

Is this a one-week sale or permanent price drop and why can't I find anything about this anywhere else? This is a major move of desperation on Sony's part.

I would not call it a "Major move of desperation". I would call it a smart move to start moving consoles.

Nope, it's desperation. They're running in third behind the Wii and 360 and if Blu-ray sales were as strong as they claimed, they wouldn't be suddenly matching Toshiba's "5 Free Movies w/Purchase" deal.

With formerly-exclusive titles like GTA IV and Assassins Creed nearing release along with the 360's AAAAA exclusives of Halo 3, Bioshock and Mass Effect also a few months off, Sony know that if they don't slash prices and give away the store now (at a monumental per-unit loss), they'll be iced out and totally screwed for the rest of this gen.

As bad as losing in the gaming segment, they're more concerned about Blu-ray. If the imbalance between the install base of HD DVD vs. Blu-ray continues, the studios that swore fealty to Sony may get wobbly and go neutral which would kick the last of Sony's legs out from under them.

Yeah, the real question is whether this is a Sony price drop that will be announced at E3 or if it's just a 1 week sale?

I believe it will be a permanent price drop but obviously I have no other ads (yet) to back that up.

This move was detailed in Home Media Retailing as an on-going part of Sony's strategy.

And as Jasko stated earlier, it may move down yet another $50 by Christmas.

Seriously, though. I wonder if they'll have a line-up / voucher system like they do with the Wii -- or if it'll be every HD enthusiast for themselves?

Are you saying that I should eliminate the blahs???

Usually that info matters to some folks..... at least that what DVDTalkers & CAG'ers tell me.....

The 5 free BR movies is Beuna Vista Home Entertainment, it is not a Sony thing. Get your facts straight before you start saying things you have no clue about.

Really, please bring this irrelevant argument to the HD forums if you don't know what you're talking about.

Just because BVHE are the movies being offered, doesn't mean that Sony isn't paying for the promotion. Sony is probably getting a big discount on the titles. Why would BVHE just issue 5 free movies for no reason?

You think this post will get locked for hostilities????

It would be my first post ever to receive that distinction.

If it was a Sony promotion, Sony would be choosing the BR movies for mistakes. The fact that BVHE makes the choices mekes it their promotion.

Notice that the movies listed do not inclkude thir big names like Cars or the Pirates movies. They're more of the catalog titles. Also, Sony would offer their own movies if it was their promotion,it would be cheaper.

Gee, is that why there are logos for Lionsgate, Warner Brothers, Paramount, 20th Century Fox on the bottom of the page, because this is a BVHE-only deal?

Whoops.

Blu-ray is what Sony is betting the farm on to save their bacon after the failure of the PSP and UMD. The $100 instant rebate deal Toshiba ran for a month scared the poo out of them. Sony is desperate. End of discussion.

I think it's a big leap to say that the PSP was a failure. I'll grant you, UMD though.

Sony is desperate. End of discussion.
In the context of this thread, I submit the following: Who gives a $#^*? Either you find it to be a 'bargain' or you don't. End of discussion. Don't bring your HD format war biases in here and ruin what has always been a very useful thread.

Makes no sense at all. These are the titles that BVHE would sell Sony at the cheaper rate. That doesn't mean that this is only a "BVHE" promotion. I'd say that you have a pretty myopic view of this promotion, and had better look at yourself before calling out others for "not knowing what they are talking about."
