Info on Banned Members?

Another board I frequent has a thread on Banned Members, and it is very helpful. I noticed a long time member was recently banned and I always look to the last posts that a member makes to see if I can see what happened.

I know DVDTalk usually keeps reasons quiet and doesn't really allow discussions of banned members, but this may help other folks understand why they are gone, and help keep it from happening again.

It's title on the other board is:

Banned/Suspended Members List, as they happen. For informational purposes only. and the typical post is:

Member: smoker
Status: Banned
Reason: Spam

Just a thought...

j/k

I know the curiosity factor is high but sometimes it's best not to know. I like the policy here at DT. As you have done, one can always do a little detective work and see some of the causes (if the posts haven't been deleted).

Plus the spam list would be HUGE.

I'm only curious when it is a long time member with years of good posting.

I'd love to see a full explanation in those cases.

Posts get deleted too often. I think we should delete less (or never) and just close the threads, maybe moving all closed threads to their own forum.

It might help other posters know what lines they cannot cross.

Isn't that the point of the Forum Rules?

Yep...Obviously the hit and run new members are meaningless, but often someone with a couple of years under their belt are banned, and it would be nice to know why.

Most of the time it's an egregious personal attack. Sometimes it's a bigoted rant of some kind (I think we had a few of these from Passion of the Christ defenders). Sometimes it's something as simple as calling Geoff at 3am.

Not to defend anyone who can't abide by the forum rules, but it's not real fair for a thread to be devoted to people who are unable to defend themselves.

And Geoff, I'm sorry. I was drunk and feeling a little lonely that night. I promise I'll never call you that late again.

This is, I'm afraid, bogus.

If you do something open to interpretation that may or may not be discipline-worthy, you'll get warned or at worst suspended for a week. You have to vault over the line of acceptability in order to get banned without warning. This means that you do not need to know what lines to cross or not because the only lines that will get you banned immediately are obvious, clearly defined lines.

Just wanted to vent about how said I am that digi is gone. He had a hot head, so it's not a complete surprise, but he was a good friend, and I'll miss him around here. I wish we'd exchanged email addresses so I could keep in touch.

I strongly second this. He and I didn't always get along, but he added a lot to the forum community.

Plus, he was always my favorite poster to get my back in threads about teh ghey.

And this becoming a tribute thread demonstrates one reason why we don't discuss banned members. Not much about learning what's allowable and how not to get banned.

So I'm going to close it up now.
