Okay, it's a long shot but to me this sounds like a movie I saw a bunch of times on HBO a few years back called "Arena". As far as I recall it wasn't football, but it was a human guy fighting aliens as a kind of intergalactic gladiator. And I dont know if she ran the station but there was a girl in the movie the he slept with. Only other thing I remember is that it has Claudia Christian from Babylon 5 in it. Here's the description from IMDB:
