I heard from an interview with him that Spy Kids and the sharkboy and lavagirl movies were all just experiments to work on animation to do movies like Sin City.
I never saw "Sharkboy and Lavagirl" (which, come to think of it, is the only RR film I've never seen) but it's obvious by watching the "Spy Kids" movies (at least the first two) that they're a real labor of love for Robert Rodriguez. When it comes to direction they're arguably the most inventive of his entire filmography and he's always been very enthusiastic about them in interviews.

I couldn't help to feel disappointed that he has now reached to a point of re-making an already established film.

Sam Raimi gets the sweet job of making Spider-Man films, not selling out, they are actually good films. Plus, I thought A Simple Plan and For Love of the Game were good films. Didn't he start up that production company for horror films?
