PS3 Resolution Question

OK, so I have a 55" Mitsubishi RP TV that does 480p and 1080i. Correct me if I'm wrong here: BR movies will output at 1080i, games that are 720p will downsize to 480p. The question is, will 1080p games play in 1080i or will it kick them down to 480p as well?

Sorry if it was asked before, but I didn't see this answered anywhere....

AFAIK, 1080p games will go to 1080i, but I've only tried Resistance so far. I seriously hope they fix this with a patch soon, because I've got if not the same TV as you, then one very close, and I can't stand the downscaling.

My understanding is movies are played at the first resolution your TV supports in this order: 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p...so if you have a tv that does support 720p you get stuck at the inferior 1080i.

Games that have a native 720p (most I believe) are down-converted to 480p skipping 1080i. If the game supports 1080p then I think it displays it in 1080i, again screwing you if you have a 720p set.

Also keep in mind that ps3 does not have a hardware scaling chip, it is forced onto the processor which leads to things like ps2 games looking worse on ps3 than on a ps2.

No, a game that is 1080p, like 2k7, will downscale to 720p, not 1080i. This is unfortunate, and hopefully Sony comes up with a patch sooner than later.

So, if my TV doesn't do 720p, it will kick a 1080p game all the way down to 480p? That's got to be the most ridiculous thing Sony could have happen. It will make me reconsider purchasing a PS3 for sure, although I do want a BR player.....

If the game says it will support 1080i, will it actually do it at 1080i??

As to the first part, you are correct, it will. I would venture to guess that this will be addressed with a firmware update.

I haven't seen any 1080i games, but if they did, I supposed it's possible.

Inferior 1080i?? Waah? Surely you're not suggesting that 720p is better than 1080i simply because the latter is interlaced.

I have a 720p projector which will scale 1080i content. What resolution should I enable? I usually just enable 720p since that's the native resolution, but this is making me think I should enable 1080i as well???

That's not even a suggestion, that's fact.

Use the native 720p resolution.

Yep, always feed your display as close to native resolution as possible.

As far as 1080i vs 720p, 720p will look a lot better on a 720p set, while 1080i will look a lot better on a 1080p set. At least in my experience.

daddydaryl - we have the same TV. Since 1080p movies on Blu-ray play at 1080i, I'm assuming 1080p games will do the same. 720p games DO downconvert to 420p, sadly.

Not even close. I have seen a lot of content on 720p and 1080i displays, and 9 times out of 10 I preferred the 1080i picture. Obviously 1080p is better, but 720p is not nearly definitively superior over 1080i.

So far I have Tiger Woods and CoD3 (both 720p). My TV won't do 720p, is there any hope in the future that a patch will allow me to play these games in HD, or is that not a possibility?

I downloaded GT:HD and NBA 07 and those look effing AMAZING in HD!

Okay I just picked up a PS3 and have a question. The native resolution of my TV is 720p (Sharp 37" LCD) so I didn't select 1080i in the menu. Will 1080i sources play at 720p?

So if the native resolution of my TV is 1080p, this is a non issue for me, right?

yes, though you'll be disappointed because the resolution for Resistance is only 720p...

Again, this is not correct.

If your TV does not support 720p, the Ps3 will downscale even 1080p games to 480p.

To make it even easier, the PS3 will not pass 1080i for gaming. Period.

He may have been referring to what happens with some 720p TVs that bump 1080i down to 540p and then upscale it to 720p. In your case, of course, that won't happen because it accepts and displays 1080i.

With a 720p display that accepts 1080p, wouldn't the best choice depend on the quality of the PS3's downscaling vs. the display's? If the display does a worse job of it, you would select 720p on the PS3, and vice versa?

Please name one PS3 game encoded in 1080i. AFAIK, there are zero.

Well, I got the PS3 and here is my early results. Blue-Ray movies play in 1080i. Games vary so far: Resistance Demo plays at 480p, NBA 07 demo plays at 1080i. GT HD plays at 1080i. Motorstorm plays at 480p. The retail game Full Auto 2 plays at 1080i. There are a couple of games that do state 1080i on the back of the package, so never say never. The only thing I've had to go 480p is Resistance and that was expected.

Remember, my TV only does 480i/480p/1080i. It will not display 720p AT ALL.... and this was via HDMI-DVI cable.... with optical sound.

Just because there aren't any launch titles in 1080i doesn't mean it can't happen. I'm just saying, the PS3 will output 1080i under current conditions if the game's native resolution in 1080i, that's all.

You cannot say that with certainty since there is no evidence that it is true. It is simply conjecture at this point.

Well, okay, it's conjecture, but it's fairly sound conjecture.
