Realistic HD DVD "wants"

I thought it might be interesting to list titles that you'd like to see on HD DVD. Unfortunately, these types of threads often get filled up with unrealistic and redundant titles (LotR! Star Wars! Indy!)

Here's a few guidelines:

* Pick 5 films each from only Warner, Universal, and Paramount catalogs.
* Pick films that haven't (yet) been announced or even strongly rumored.
* Pick ones that you think (for one reason or another) would really help make the format look more appealing to consumers.
* Pick titles that have a 'realistic' chance of coming out. (no Indiana Jones, etc.)

Here's my stab at it:

Warner
The Iron Giant
King Kong (1933)
Once Upon a Time in America
THX-1138
The Wild Bunch

Universal
American Graffiti
Dragonheart
The Frighteners
Jaws
Mallrats

Paramount
The Phantom
The Ten Commandments
Tucker: Man and His Dream
War of the Worlds (1953)
Witness

before I list, I would put Spielberg titles in the unrealistic category.

PARAMOUNT (DREAMWORKS)
Shrek
The Truman Show
Collateral
Gladiator
Forrest Gump
Friday the 13th movies

UNIVERSAL
The Bourne Identity
Dawn of the Dead '04
Classic Monsters
The Game
Scarface

WARNER BROS.
Ocean's Eleven
Heat
North by Northwest
Any "Hammer" horror titles

NEW LINE
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre '03 (to coincide with "The Beginning" video release)
Austin Powers
Rush Hour
Wedding Crashers
A Nightmare on Elm Street

I'm eager for Paramount to release Apocalypse Now and Grease. Given that they just re-released both on DVD, that seems pretty realistic.

Let's just hope they drop the stupid-as-hell "Rockin' Rydell Edition" thing from it.

This is a wish list, isn't it?

Movies like these may not be on any immediate release lists, but that doesn't mean we couldn't realistically hope for them within a year or so.

Hmm, off the top of my head, I'd say Lawrence of Arabia, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alien, and Pulp Fiction.

I'm not sure why. Animation will benefit the least from SD -> HD.

It's cool to "show off" but not really indicative of any quality.

Either way, they'll be on board in 2007.

Oh, I don't know, I think HD would be able to take advantage of a film like Sleeping Beauty, which was shot in Technicolor and had a 6-track audio mix for its 70mm release.

There's a whole thread on AVS discussing it. Animation needs the least "resolution" to look great.

I know, but that doesn't mean every animation title won't look any better past 480p.

Has Warner even released The Magnificent Ambersons on SD DVD? I had to import a copy from France.

L.A. Confidential should come out next year with the 10th anniversary DVD release that was mentioned in an HTF chat. Blade Runner should also come out when the DVD boxed set is released. You can knock those off the list if you're not too impatient.

No but they have been apparently "working on it" for some time and were looking for the best elements. I think we'll probably see it sometime next year on SD DVD. If HD DVD takes off, we might get lucky and get this one. Glorious Black & White photography.

The French DVD looked pretty good and I've seen it on film and it looked in great shape, so I wonder what better elements Warner is looking for at this point.

Unless by "better elements" they mean "Welles' original cut," in which case, I'm all for it!
