I'll be surprised if Virgin really does move to another spot. That was the same story for the one in Columbus, Ohio. I haven't heard of it re-opening anywhere. If it did, I would love to know about it. I used to make a two hour trek from Cleveland to Columbus just to visit Virgin and the Cheesecake Factory. At least we now got Cheesecake at home, but still no Virgins.

Does anyone know if the Virgin Megastore has increased the percentage off of music and DVDs. I was told that they'll be closing in November, so I would assume that it would happen soon if it's going to happen at all. Thanks.

I walked past the store the other night and the discounts were still the same. I would guess they'll increase within the next week or two.

Anyone have any updates on the % off for DVDs/CDs?

It was still 50% as of Monday evening when I stopped in.

Thanks for the info - I am trying to make myself hold out until it hits 75% off.

If you hold off until 75% off, there will be nothing left. It's clearing quickly. A little depressing seeing it all go.

I couldn't disagree more. Not only are Virgin prices higher, but they're using more space in that building than Tower did, and yet offer a far smaller selection of titles. The only thing I ever did in that store was take a dump (whenever Crate & Barrel's restrooms were out-of-order).

I was sorry to see Tower go, but could care less about Virgin. Maybe one tenant is simply not enough for a building that size? I wouldn't mind seeing something akin to the Garage in Harvard Sq. at this location, with a variety of shops, parlors, eateries and bodegas. That's an important piece of real estate, and we need something more than the T-stop to anchor that end of Newbury.

When I was in high school, I purchased my fair share of discs and vids from that Tower, along with Newbury Comics, of course. Newbury always had new CD releases at $9.77 or $10.77 (something like that), which BLEW AWAY the prices at Tower. But Tower had some gems in there at times too, such as the (gently) used Cocteau Twins import vinyl EPs I bought for around $5/ea! And a little later, they had a great selection of LDs (with Lazer Craze on the next block, that was primo LD-buying territory!). Tower did have some decent sales every once in a while, but once Virgin was in there, my taste in music shifted to more indie stuff, and it was easier to buy it online than shop in a store. I wonder if I would have bought as much from Virgin if it was there 15 years ago (*wow*...).

It's a shame that Tower is going out of business now, too. But given that it's been years since I spent more than $20 in either store, I can understand why.

Remember when EU Wurlitzer was right nextdoor? I bought my trusty Juno-2 from them at that location! Other Boston stores I miss: Planet Records, Mystery Train, Second Coming...

Also to keep in mind -- they will NOT go lower than 50%, atleast at the one Dallas they did not. I thought they would go lower but all up until even the last day it was 50%. So if you want it and it is OOP, rare, want it bad or can not find elsewhere, get it now since the longer you wait at 50% the less will be there come closing when you see it is still 50%.

That was true years ago, but I've definitely noticed an increase in their pricing over the last couple of years, and not just on new stuff, either. There was a time when they had the best prices on USED product, too - but now their USED prices are some of the highest I've seen.

It's unfortuntely just another side effect of sales being down at B&M stores everywhere, no matter which retailer it is.

True, you can still find the occasional good deal at Newburry - but these days, you really gotta shop around to get the best deals.

Anyone know is the discount on DVDs/music has increased at all?

I need to get myself in there before everything is gone.

Still 50% on CDs, DVDs and books, and 75% on clothing. I doubt it will go any higher than that.

DVD wise there isn't much left in the store.

Too late (at least from the DVD perspective). The store is pretty much wiped out of DVDs.
