Sorry, but HD DVDs will only play in true HD DVD players (upconverting DVD players are still regular DVD players, even though they claim "HD" capabilities).

There are a couple of titles you can buy and expect to play in your standard DVD player. These are on discs called "hybrids" which have HD on one side and DVD on the other. Rumor has it is the first such release, though I think there are others planned.

i came across the wikipedia article about HD dvds. it states that old dvd players will be able to play HD dvds. dunno if it's true though... or maybe just certain HD DVDs that come out...
"HD DVD has a dual-layer capacity of 30 GB and a single-layer capacity of 15 GB. Toshiba has announced a triple-layer disc which offers 45GB of storage. HD DVD can offer both the current DVD and HD DVD formats on one disc, which means that special HD DVD discs will play in any DVD player, old or the new high definition players. Blu-ray does not. "

That wikipedia quote is a bit misleading. The discs it is referring to are hybrid discs, which contain both a standard DVD and an HD DVD version of the feature on the same disc, one on each side. With these discs, you will be able to play the standard DVD side in a regular DVD player, but the HD DVD side will still only play in an HD DVD player.
