Is there a huge benefit from paying through paypal, other than having to wait for the money to clear to your bank and using those funds?
When you order something with paypal, are the funds taken immediately? I'd greatly prefer if places gave the option of paying for pre-orders up front. That way I wouldn't see the money sitting in my account and end up spending more than I should and then get screwed when my order ships.

Can't you just use the paypal debit card option which works anywhere they accept Mastercard that doesn't require the 3 digit security code?
I use it at Amazon all the time.
You may need to have a balance to do that, but you can transfer money in the same way you make a payment I think.

I personally don't want Paypal to have any access to my bank account, so when I end up with a balance (from selling on Ebay, etc), I use Paypal wherever possible to use it up. I never found a single option to get money out without registering a bank account. Perhaps the original poster is in the same situation.

this involves getting "verified" which means that you have to add a bank account...which i simply can't see doing

Indeed, that is exactly the situation I am in. I recently got some money from selling on ebay and rather than register a bank account with paypal I would prefer to use it up at places that accept it as payment.
Also a big thanks to all the stores everyone has listed for me. I never realized buy.com and dvdplanet accepted paypal. I'll probably be using up most of the cash at those places.
