So, it looks like Sony (a) hasn't abandoned Superbit, as many (including me) had thought and (b) the MGM catalog they aquired is now available for this.

What MGM titles would you like to see?

i honestly don't see why superbit would even be an issue any more. with a HD format on the horizon, I'm not going to really bother with SB...even though I have a bunch of them. I'm surprised they're even being released.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised too... with the lack of recent releases and the Best Buy $9.99 "sale" (I assumed "clearance"), I thought we had seen the last of these.

I'm definitely less excited about this concept now that we're closer to blu-ray becoming a reality. But, I'll probably pick up some of my favorites as they come out, assuming they're relatively cheap and, obviously, an improvement over the current editions.

Is that statistically the least desirable title in the entire MGM catalog. I honestly think that even dookie like Bio-Dome would sell more copies.

If they are going to start doing Mgm stuff in superbit, then the least they could do are go with films like Annie Hall, Network, Poltergeist, Great Train Robbery, Child's Play, Pumpkinhead or Brainstorm, as the current discs are pretty shoddy and appear to have been transferred from old LD masters.

The current Mad Max dvd looks just fine as it is.

Bugg -- MGM doesn't hold the rights to Poltergeist any more. Warner will have to take care of any future remastering.

I was tempted to include that too... but the thought of re-buying 20+ DVDs (without extras) just for marginal improvement in picture/sound seems daunting. I might just hold out for Blu-ray with those!

For me, a bigger issue is bringing out a RESPECTABLE release for some MGM films, like Terminator. The 2001 release, the DVD-14, looked great and had nice special features. That is now out-of-print. Sony needs to bring that back as a 2-disc SE. I don't think it needs a Superbit, as the film was by itself anyway. Robocop needs a stand-alone release. Thief needs to be re-released with the theatrical cut (and cleaned up). Etc. I think this is more important than just Superbit. It will be interesting (or frustrating) to see how Sony handles MGM's catalog.
