Mostly DVD info, but your take on the film would be nice too.

I liked the movie well enough; though it's not my normal cup of tea, it's entertaining and clever. The DVD provides very solid picture and sound; the latter especially surprised me, as I expected little from a 5.1 track for a movie about chess playing. Nonetheless, it's broad and accurate and works well. The only way in which the DVD fails comes from its extras: there aren't any (not even a trailer).

i haven't seen it on dvd yet, though i plan to, i have seen it on vhs ooops, before.
as far as the movie is concerned, it's excellent and if you are at all intrested in chess, as i am, you will find it exceptional, good acting all around and good story and paceing . and the merging of the little chess prodigy and the bobby fischer story makes the movie

I also own the disc and have watched it. The transfer does display a higher than average amount of film blemishing, but it is a well-colored and rich anamorphic transfer that you should find pleasing. The DD5.1 is very crisp, with good use of the surrounds where appropriate. The disc has no extras at all, however.

I enjoyed the film years ago when it was on cable and enjoyed it just as much a week ago when I rented it. The only complaint I have is that it was at times difficult to understand the kid playing Josh as I'm not used to being around children and he sort of mumbled some of the lines or something. Otherwise a great film.

Guys,

Thanks for the reviews. I've seen most of the film before, and I just picked it up. On watching it fully for the first time, the thing that strikes me as amazing is Josh's not stooping to disliking or cheating his opponents no matter what his father or his teacher tell him.

Bruce: Do you know what it means to have "contempt" for your opponent?
Josh: No.
Bruce: It means to hate them. You have to hate them Josh, they hate you.
Josh: But I don't hate them.
Bruce: Well you'd better start.
