A Tale of Two Sisters - R1 DVD Subtitle Problems

Just got the R1 DVD of A Tale of Two Sisters (great flick, BTW). The only problem is that I can't get the subtitles to display...

In a show of great wisdom, Tartan locked down the audio + subtitle tracks, so you can only select them from a menu. But when I select English from the subtitle menu, I get no subtitles at all. The audio tracks change when I choose them, but the subs are off no matter what.

I can't remember my DVD player (at work now), but I've never had a problem before, and I've got hundreds of foreign films.

Just wondering if anybody else picked this disc up, and if they're getting the same thing.

I have a Malata 996, and I didn't have any problems with this disc.

You're lucky it just doesn't keep displaying "Property of Tartan Video" like on their review copies.

Seriously, I own a "normal" copy and didn't have that problem.

I'll hook up my old DVD player tonight and see if it's just me. No matter what I tried (stopping it, ejecting it, going back and forth to the menu), they refused to display. Thanks for the help, though!

Side note: Anybody find the video quality a little shady? I have the R3, and it looks a lot better (to my eyes), especially the white wall at the very beginning.
